Josue Jean Philippe Valeton the Younger (born October 14, 1848 in Groningen , † January 14, 1912 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch theologian and orientalist .

Life

Valeton came from a French noble family whose members had found a new home in the Netherlands as Huguenots in 1730. He was the son of the Groningen professor of the same name Josue Jean Philippe Valeton the Elder and his wife Sara Maria Goeverneur. After attending the Progymnasium and taking private lessons in Groningen, he began studying theology at the University of Groningen in 1866 . He continued this from 1867 at the University of Utrecht and in 1871 at the University of Geneva . On March 24, 1871, he received his doctorate in Utrecht with the work Isaiah volgens zijne algemeen as genuinely recognizing writings to become a doctor of theology. After initially working as an assistant preacher in the Walloon community in Brussels , he was a Reformed pastor in Varik from November 3, 1872, and from November 1875 in the same capacity in Bloemendaal . On September 10, 1877, he was appointed professor of the history of Judaism, the Hebrew language and the interpretation of the Old Testament by the curators of the University of Utrecht, which he did on December 8, 1877 with the introductory speech De Israëlitiesche letterkunde as onderdeel der christelijke theologie started.

In his capacity as a Utrecht university lecturer, he also took part in the organizational tasks of the university and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1882/83 and 1897/98 . At the resignation of the offices he gave the speeches De Israëlietische Historiographie (1883) and De veronderstelling der theologie (1898). Valeton belonged to the theological current of the ethical theology of the Groninger school. He published in various magazines and journals of his time, including the German magazine for pastoral theology , the magazine for practical theology and the new year books for German theology . The section The Israëliten in the textbook of the history of religion comes from his pen, he was together with Pierre Daniel Chantepie de la Saussaye the founder of the theological Dutch journals De Studiën (1875-1881) and of Overdenkingen . In 1904 he became a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences , was a member of the Provincial Utrecht Society of Sciences and Arts, in 1909 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Geneva, in 1886 he was knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion and in 1911 he was awarded the Prussian Order of the Crown .

Valeton married on October 24, 1872 in Amersfoort with Anna Christina Voorhoeve (born February 26, 1849 in Leerdam, † June 8, 1936 in De Bilt), the daughter of Hermanus Cornelis Voorhoeve (born March 4, 1818 in Rotterdam, † 30 August 1903 in Utrecht) and his wife Anna Christina Francken (born September 20, 1819 in Muiden; † August 18, 1903 in Utrecht).
