Peter Bondam

Peter Bondam (also: Pieter or Petrus Bondam ; born December 26, 1727 in Kampen , † February 6, 1800 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch historian and lawyer.

Life

The son of the cloth merchant Rutger Bondam and his wife Christina Stercke (Starke) attended the Latin school in his hometown and the grammar school there. On July 17, 1742, he began to study literature and languages at the University of Franeker , heard lectures by Lodewijk Caspar Valckenaer (1715–1785) and defended a speech ter vereering van Cicero's welsprekendheid (freely translated: respect for Cicero's rhetoric ). He changed his field of study to law, for which he attended the lectures of Christiaan Hendrik Pots . Under this he defended the treatise Specimen animadversionum criticarum ad loca quaedam juris civilis depravat on July 7, 1746 (Franeker 1746) and was then awarded a doctorate in law.

On August 1, 1746, he went to the University of Leiden , where he attended the lectures of Tiberius Hemsterhuis , but also followed the lectures of the local law teachers. In 1748 he became vice principal and teacher at the Latin school in his hometown. In 1755 he went to Zutphen in the same position and received the title of high school professor of law. Here, however, not only were law his profession, but he also gave lectures on the humanities. In 1762 Bondam became rector of the Latin school and librarian in Zutphen.

Bondam, whose attitude to life was to stay away from political and theological disputes, received the following year - on January 14, 1763 - a position as professor of law at the University of Harderwijk . He took up this post on April 14 with a speech on the Greek views of Roman law. In 1764 he became rector of the Harderwijker Hochschule and in 1770 he was appointed the official historian of the province of Gelderland. On December 21, 1772 he was appointed professor of Roman law, patriotic constitutional law, patriotic diplomacy and feudal law from the curators of the Utrecht University. He followed this on May 19, 1773 with the inaugural address de subsidiis, ad solidam juris Belgici cognitionem necessariis, vulgo tamen nimis negligi solitis . In Utrecht he also took part in the organizational tasks of the university and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1776/77 and 1788/89 . Through his research on sources he made an outstanding contribution to Dutch legal and political history and also received international recognition.

family

Bondam was married three times. His first marriage was on May 16, 1752 with Rolina Meijer (1724 - May 8, 1782). The marriage resulted in three sons and three daughters, one of whom a son and a daughter died young. The son Gerard Bondam became mayor of Kampen and was married to Anna Kok. Rutger Bondam became captain and lived in Kampen, he was married to Johanna Agnita Wilhelmina le Fefre de Montigny. Christina Bondam married Jacob Botter Heurdt (* 1755; born January 27, 1786 in Harderwijk) in 1783 and was married to Willem Jan Tulleken for the second time. Bondam closed his second marriage on August 1, 1784 with Maria Christina van Noortwijck (? -26 December 1796) and his third marriage on September 17, 1798 with Sophia Susanna Arntzenius. The last two marriages were childless.
