Tjalling Halbertsma (born July 15, 1841 in Sneek , † April 29, 1898 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch gynecologist and obstetrician .

Life

Tjalling Halbertsma was the son of the doctor and obstetrician Klaas Tjallings Halbertsma (born October 8, 1815 in Grouw; † December 23, 1879 in Sneek) and his wife Hesterina ten Cate (born August 29, 1819 in Sneek; † August 20, 1866 in Utrecht).

After initially attending school, he attended the grammar school in his hometown from 1853 and matriculated at the University of Leiden on September 21, 1858 . Here he studied medicine with Hidde Halbertsma Justuszoon and Abraham Everard Simon Thomas . He continued his education at the city hospital in Rotterdam with Jan Bastiaan Molewater (1813–1864) and Machiel Polano (1813–1878), where he also attended lectures at the local medical school. On December 18, 1863 he received his doctorate in Leiden with the thesis De keelspiegel en zijne aanwending as a doctor of medicine. He then went on an educational trip that initially took him to the University of Tübingen , where he followed the lectures of Hubert von Luschka , Felix von Niemeyer and Victor von Bruns . He continued these studies at the University of Vienna with Ernst Wilhelm von Brücke , Johann von Oppolzer and Gustav Braun . Eventually he moved to Paris , where he met Jules Péan .

In March 1865 he returned to his homeland and became a general practitioner in his birthplace. On April 23, 1866, he received a call as professor of gynecology at the Reichsuniversität Groningen , which he followed and the post entrusted to him on June 28 of the same year with the speech De voortrefflijkheid der Hedendaagsche raffle (freely translated into German: The greatness of today's obstetrics ) started. Since the chair of gynecology and obstetrics at the University of Utrecht had become vacant due to the departure of Adolf Gusserow , the curators of the university decided to appoint Halbertsma as his successor on June 21, 1867. He followed this call and began the task assigned to him on October 15, 1867 with the introductory speech Over de merits der Engelschen op Gynaecologische gebied in het Verband der Gynaecologie met de Geneeskunde (freely translated into German: About the merits of the English in the gynecological field, in the medical field Context of gynecology ).

In his capacity as a Utrecht university lecturer, Halbertsma also took part in the organizational tasks of the university and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1872/73 . He put this task down with the speech Eene viejfentwintigjarige voorbereiding, een zwaard van Damócles voor onze gymnasia en hoogescholen (freely translated into German: A twenty-five year preparation, a sword of Damocles for our high schools and universities ). His contributions on the etiology and the therapy of preeclampsia had made him known beyond the borders of his country. He suggested using the caesarean to cure eclampsia . He also recommended external examinations as a prophylactic against puerperal fever and established the diagnosis of the location of the placenta through a test puncture. Halbertsma was an honorary member of the Obstetrical Society in Edinburgh, 1868 member of the provincial Utrecht Society of Arts and Sciences and in 1889 Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion .

On July 26, 1883, Halbertsma married in Utrecht Johanna Helena Elisabeth van der Mandere (* September 21, 1849 in 's Gravenpolder; † September 26, 1886 in Utrecht), the daughter of Boudewijn van der Mandere (* December 15, 1808 in Middelburg ; † January 11, 1879 in Utrecht) and his wife Sara Johanna Ignatia Sybille Coenen van s' Gravensloot (born September 15, 1812 in Utrecht; † December 8, 1883 ibid). The son and later Vice President of the Court of Justice in Wassenaar, Steven Nicolaas Boudewijn Halbertsma (born March 22, 1884 in Utrecht; † August 7, 1965 in Wassenaar), who met Jenny Louise Quarles van on March 18, 1915 in The Hague, comes from the marriage Ufford (born May 15, 1883 in Loosduinen, † March 22, 1969 in Wassenaar) married, the daughter of Louis Pierre van Ufford and Maria van Herwaarden.
