Hendrik Peter Godfried Quack

Hendrik Peter Godfried Quack (born July 2, 1834 in Zetten in Gelderland, † January 6, 1917 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch historian and economist.

Life

Hendrik Peter Godfried was the son of the brewer Peter Christoffel Quack (born October 18, 1801 in Nijmegen; † October 3, 1878 in Arnhem) and his wife Theodora Segerina Heineken (born January 18, 1803 in Amsterdam; † February 5, 1885 in Arnhem ). Due to financial difficulties, his parents moved to Baarn , where Quack attended school. In 1848 Quack moved into the grammar school and in 1853 the Athenaeum Illustre Amsterdam . Here he was prepared as a student of Jeronimo de Bosch Kemper (1808–1876) and Martinus des Amorie van der Hoeven (1824–1868) for a law degree and was familiarized with the Christian criticism of Dutch liberalism. He continued his studies at the University of Utrecht , where he received his doctorate in law on December 13, 1859 with the treatise Het staatswezen in de XIVde eeuw, historically ontwikkeld (freely translated into German: The State of the 14th Century, Historically Developed ). Quack then worked as a journalist in Haarlem and in 1861 as a secretary at the Chamber of Commerce in Amsterdam.

In 1863 Quack became secretary of the Society for the Development of the State Railways in Utrecht . On August 6, 1868, the curators of the University of Utrecht appointed him professor of political economy, which he took up on October 23, 1868 with the speech Staat en maatschappij (freely translated into German: State and Society ). Here he also took part in the organizational tasks of the university and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1874/75 . He put this task down with the speech Bouw en samenstel der maatschappij (freely translated into German: construction and structure of society ). On November 30, 1877, he resigned his professorship, in December of the same year went to the Dutch Bank in Amsterdam as secretary and became its director on July 1, 1885. On September 29, 1885 he was also associate professor of history and political economy at the University of Amsterdam , which task he resigned on June 14, 1894.

Quack was a critic of the economic liberalism of the Netherlands and found fertile soil in the social aspirations of democracy. Although he did not consistently pursue the goals of Ferdinand Domela Nieuwenhuis , he rather oriented himself towards the ideas of Henri de Saint-Simon and Ferdinand Lassalle . In this context his main literary work De Socialisten, Personen en stelsels (freely translated into German: Die Sozialisten, Menschen und Systeme ) was created. In this work he describes the history of a social democracy from antiquity to his time. This literary work originally consisted of four volumes, which were written from 1875 to 1897 and was expanded to six volumes by A. Lehning between 1921 and 1923. With this Quack intended to introduce liberal circles in the Netherlands to the thinking of the emerging social movement of workers. As one of the first Dutch works on this subject, it was an inspiration for several generations of social democrats.

Quack became a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences (KNAW) in 1877 , in 1871 a member of the Zeeland Society of Sciences in Middelburg, he was chairman of the Society for the Common Use and a member of the provincial Utrecht Society of Sciences and Arts. In 1891 he became Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion , in 1867 Knight of the Order of the Oak Crown , in 1901 Commander of the Belgian Order of Leopold and in 1914 Grand Officer of the House Order of Orange .

Quack married on December 14, 1865 in Amsterdam Clasine Thérèse van Heukelom (born June 11, 1841 in Amsterdam; † October 22, 1923 there), the daughter of Hendrik Pieter van Heukelom (born July 20, 1816 in Amsterdam; † August 26 1878 in Luik (Belgium)) and his wife Charlotte Maria Planteau (born November 5, 1818 in Paramaribo (Suriname), † April 18, 1869 in The Hague). The marriage remained childless.
