Arnoldus Johannes Petrus van den Broek (born October 27, 1877 in Haarlem , † February 18, 1961 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch anatomist .

Life

Arnoldus Johannes Petrus was the son of Cornelis Jan van den Broek (* December 21, 1842 in Utrecht; † May 23, 1905 in Haarlem) and his wife Anna Maria Catharina Boogaert (* May 6, 1849 in Ovezande; † October 2, 1925 in The Hague). After attending high school in his native city, he began studying medicine at the University of Amsterdam in 1895 at the age of seventeen . Here Louis Bolk became his formative teacher. He passed his medical exam in 1898 and was appointed doctor on June 14, 1902. He then worked as a prosector for anatomy in Amsterdam. As such, he wrote several publications in the anatomical and ontogenetic field. In 1905 he was appointed lecturer in anatomy in Amsterdam and on August 5, 1909 professor of anatomy at the University of Utrecht , which he did on October 4, 1909 with the introductory speech Over korrelaties in het dierlijk organisme (German: About correlation in the animal body ) started. As such, he made a name for himself primarily through his anthropological studies of parts of the population of the Netherlands.

He also authored a variety of textbooks in the field of anatomy and also wrote works that appeared in the German-speaking world. Broek was twice chairman of the provincial Utrecht Society of the Arts and Sciences ( Dutch : Provinciaal Utrechts Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschappen ), a member of the Association of Anatomists and a member of the Dutch National Bureau of Anthropology ( Dutch : Nederlandsch Nationaal Bureau voor Anthropologie ). On January 8, 1924, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Amsterdam, and in the 1923/24 academy year he was elected rector of the Utrecht Alma Mater , for which he gave the rector's speech on March 26, 1924, De normal gestalte van den Mensch (German: The normal form of humans ) held. He was also made Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion in 1932 and, in the same year, due to his services to the identification of the remains of Johann Amos Comenius , Knight of the Order of the White Lion of Czechoslovakia . On September 20, 1948 he retired from his professorship and held his farewell speech on October 7, which dealt with the subject of Over de rijkdom van het menselijk organisme (German: On the wealth of the human organism ).

Broek married on December 14, 1911 in Utrecht with Mary Wilhelmina Henriette Dekhuijzen (born May 31, 1890 in Leiden; † October 5, 1974 in Utrecht), the daughter of the doctor Marinus Cornelis Dekhuijzen (born May 7, 1859 in Rotterdam, † October 10, 1924 Utrecht) and Alida Heiltje Gerarda Peter (born November 11, 1858 in Rotterdam; † March 18, 1920 in Utrecht). A daughter and two sons are from the marriage. From the children we know:
