Johannes Antonius James Barge also: Ton Barge (born January 27, 1884 in Semarang , † February 18, 1952 in Leiden ) was a Dutch anatomist .

Life

Origin and education

Johannes Antonius James was born the son of the coffee merchant of the same name (born June 27, 1847 in Amsterdam; † September 9, 1921 ibid.) And his wife Susanna Margaretha Roselje (born August 20, 1849 in Amsterdam; † February 21, 1928 ibid.) . He had spent his youth in Hilversum and Amsterdam . Barge attended grammar school in Katwijk , moved to the University of Amsterdam in 1901 and became a member of the Catholic student association Sanctus Thomas Aquinas . On May 19, 1909, he passed his medical exam, then worked as an assistant at the Amsterdam anatomical laboratory with Louis Bolk and received his doctorate there on July 1, 1912 on the subject of Friesche en Marker schedels, bijdrage tot de kennis van de anthropologie der bevolking van Nederland (German : Skulls from Friesland and brands , contributions to the knowledge of the anthropology of the population of the Netherlands ) to the doctor of medicine. In 1913 he rose to the position of prosector at the anatomical laboratory and completed his habilitation in 1916 as a private lecturer in Amsterdam.

Professor of Anatomy in Leiden

After he had refused an appointment as professor at the Belgian University of Ghent , he was appointed on January 24, 1919 to the professorship of anatomy and embryology at the University of Leiden . He took on this task on May 17, 1919 with the introductory speech Vorm en Functie (German: Form and Function ). In scientific journals he devoted himself to topics such as the cranio-cervical transition with the head joints , the pericardium and the cleft lip and palate . He has also published works on anthropology , comparative anatomy, theoretical biology and the history of anatomy. In the academy year 1937/38 he was rector of the Alma Mater and on February 8, 1938 he gave the rector's speech Praeformatie en Epigenese (German: Preformation and Epigenese ). Barge had already given a public lecture on November 26, 1940, together with Rudolph Cleveringa , after the dismissal of various Jewish colleagues in Leiden, such as Eduard Meijers and Martin David , about the nonsense of the racial doctrine of the National Socialists. He made it scientifically clear that there was no difference between the Jewish and the German races. The lecture caused a sensation among the medical students, who finally decided to join the strike of the law students that broke out because of the dismissal of the Jewish employees. The lecture was not noticed by the German occupiers. After he resigned his professorship on May 30, 1942, he was arrested eighteen months after his protest lecture and interned in Sint-Michielsgestel . After the Leiden University was closed by the German occupiers of the Netherlands from 1943 to 1945, Barge resumed his teaching post on September 4, 1945.

Politics, Literature & Science

Barge was also involved in the Roomsch-Katholieke Staatspartij (RKSP). He was a member of the First Chamber of the States General from September 21, 1937 to October 20, 1949 , with interruptions during the German occupation of the Netherlands from 1940 to 1945. Barge was made a Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lions and he became an officer of the Belgian Order of the Crown . In 1924 he became a member of the Society of Dutch Literature in Leiden, was a member of the Genootschap van Natur- en Geneeskunst (German: Society for Natural History and Medicine ) in Amsterdam, and a member of the Provinciaal Utrechts Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschappen (German: Provincial Utrecht Society for the Arts and sciences ), he was deputy chairman of the Nederlands Natuurkundig Bureau voor Anthropologie (German: Dutch natural science office for anthropology ) and chairman of the Vereniging tot bevordering der wetenschappen onder de kathieken in Nederland (German: Association for the promotion of science among the Catholics in the Netherlands ). On January 27, 1949 he became a royal decision emeritus and was in the same year a member of the Catholic People's Party , the successor party to the RKSP.
