She studied art history , theater and film studies at the University of Erlangen and the Sorbonne Nouvelle Paris and was a research fellow at the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University . She received her doctorate in 2000 with the dissertation “Influences of the Bauhaus stage in the USA” at the University of Erlangen. Her work examines the connection between the Bauhaus stage, avant-garde performance and postmodern dance in the USA - with an emphasis on aesthetic and educational aspects. She explores the interdisciplinary ideas of the Bauhaus, which are reflected in the curricula of Black Mountain College and, among other things, led to the creation of John Cage's first " Happening ". Her work was the first study to investigate and show in detail the relationship between the European Bauhaus and the American experimental stage in full scientific depth.

Pawelke has taught performance art in theory and practice at the Sorbonne Nouvelle III , the University of Paris VIII , the Parsons School of Design Paris and art history at the Aix-en-Provence Art Academy. Pawelke works internationally and has given lectures and workshops in Beirut , Berlin , Budapest , Rouen , Stockholm and Vilnius . She was a guest speaker at the Center Pompidou in Paris, at the Kunst-Werken Institute for Contemporary Art Berlin and at the Bauhaus Dessau.

Pawelke developed projects and programs for the Fondation de France , the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation , the Alfred Toepfer Foundation and the Federal Agency for Civic Education Germany. Between 2006 and 2010 she initiated and developed the “New Client” program in Germany. In collaboration with six curators and art institutions (including Deichtorhallen Hamburg), she expanded the European platform “New Clients” from France, Belgium and Italy to Germany with the aim of realizing art by and for civil society .

Pawelke specializes in art projects in urban areas and in art projects with environmental topics. She worked at the PS1 Center of Contemporary Art in New York , the Fondazione Pistoletto Biella, and is particularly interested in the social relevance and effects of her projects and interventions.

She has worked with the artists Jochen Gerz and Michelangelo Pistoletto and organized workshops with choreographers such as VA Wölfl , Philippe Découflé , Angelin Preljocaj , Rachid Ouramdane, Marcos Morau, Niv Sheinfeld and Oren Laor.

In 2015 she showed film interviews with former Black Mountain students as part of the Black Mountain exhibition at Hamburger Bahnhof - Museum für Gegenwart (with Ati Gropius , choreographer Anna Halprin and Yvonne Rainer, among others ).
