Ati Gropius Johansen

Ati Gropius Johansen (* 1926 in Wiesbaden as Beate Forberg , † September 7, 2014 in Wellfleet , Massachusetts ) was a German illustrator and art teacher. She was the daughter of Ilse Frank's sister and was adopted by Walter and Ise Gropius after her death .

Life

Ati Gropius emigrated to the USA with her adoptive parents Ise and Walter Gropius in 1937 . Here she was trained at Black Mountain College in the tradition of the Bauhaus art school. After graduating, she moved to Boston when she was 21 . She lived in Rome , Colorado and Chicago before settling with her husband, the architect John M. Johansen , in New York City settled.

Gropius Johansen taught the preliminary course based on the model of Josef Albers at the New York Museum of Modern Art and the Walter Gropius School in Erfurt .

Gropius Johansen campaigned for the preservation of the Bauhaus legacy throughout his life. She was an important sponsor of the Bauhaus Archive , which was founded in 1960 by Walter Gropius in Berlin . Her daughter Erika Pfammatter continues this work.

In 2012 Gropius Johansen published memories of her father in the book Walter Gropius. The Man Behind the Ideas .
