Bernardus Schotanus (also: Schoot, Schot ; * October 7, 1598 in Franeker ; † October 5, 1652 in Leiden ( October 15, 1652 greg. , At that time the Gregorian calendar was in effect in Leiden)) was a Dutch lawyer and mathematician.

Life

The son of the law professor at the University of Franeker Henricus Schotanus (1549-1605) and his wife Geertke, daughter of the mayor of Leeuwarden Meinhard Poll, matriculated on May 29, 1614 at the Frisian University of Franeker . Here he first completed a degree in philosophy and obtained the academic degree of a master's degree.

He then concentrated on studying law, with Timaeus Faber (1558–1623) in particular promoting his education. From there he moved to the University of Leiden , where he attended lectures by Johannes Lindershausen (1571–1645), Cornelis Sylvius (also: Bosch, around 1586-around 1643), Petrus Cunaeus and Cornelis Swanenburch (1574–1530). Under Hector Bouricius (1593-1636) he received on April 12, 1622 the academic degree of Doctor of Law. He then worked as a lawyer in Leeuwarden .

In 1624, after the death of Timaeus Faber, he was given a full professorship in law at the University of Franeker. In Franeker he also took on a variety of tasks in the city. He was inspector of the orphanage, church elder and overseer of the pension funds. In addition, on May 7, 1632, he rose to become the first professor of law and was elected rector of the university. A financially lucrative offer lured him to the University of Utrecht in 1635 as Professor of Law , where he also taught mathematics three times a week as a professor. He had also been given the founding rectorate of the university . After the death of Petrus Cunaeus, he moved to the University of Leiden as Professor of the Codex in 1641, where he worked until the end of his life. In 1644/45 he was rector here too .

Schotanus was married twice. His first marriage was in 1620 with Maria Schooten, daughter of his uncle Johannes Schooten. His second marriage was in 1627 with Anna Catharina, daughter of the law professor in Herborn Johannes Althusius and his wife Magaret Naurath. From his first marriage there is a son who became mayor of Franeker and a member of the States General.
