Petrus Cunaeus

Petrus Cunaeus ; also: Peter van der Cun, Pieter van Kun (* 1586 in Vlissingen ; † December 2, 1638 in Leiden ) was a Dutch philologist and legal scholar.

Life

The son of the merchant Adrian Cunaeus had received his first training in Middelburg and he was enrolled in the matriculation of the University of Leiden on May 23, 1601 as a teenager . Here he studied under the guidance of a relative on his mother's side, Ambrosius Regemorteus, ancient literature, Greek and Hebrew. In 1603 he interrupted his studies and traveled to England. When he returned to Leiden he continued his studies with Joseph Justus Scaliger , Bonaventura Vulcanius and Daniel Heinsius . He then moved to the University of Franeker , where he followed the lectures of Johannes Drusius (Johannes van den Driesche; 1550-1616) on the oriental languages, but also frequented the legal lectures of Marcus Lyclama a Nyeholt and Timaeus Faber (1578-1623) .

On November 30, 1608 he enrolled again in the matriculation of the Leiden University. After he had worked here since 1611 as a lecturer on Horatius, he became on February 8, 1612 associate professor of the Latin and Greek languages. On August 7, 1613 he was given the full professorship of the Latin language and on February 8, 1614 he became a full professor of politics. After he had obtained his doctorate in law under Cornelius Swanenburg (1574-1630) in 1615 , he completed an internship in a law firm with the approval of the curators of the Leiden University in The Hague . On his return to Leiden, he took over the legal chair of the Digest on November 8, 1615 and, after Swanenburg's death on June 20, 1630, that of the Codex.

In addition, shortly before his death, he was appointed historian of the States of Zealand. The events of the Dordrecht Synod , at which he was denigrated by religious zealots, had a less positive effect on him . He also took part in the organizational tasks of the Leiden University and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1623, 1624, 1632 and 1637 .

From his marriage on May 16, 1616 to Maria van Zeyst, daughter of the pensioner Niclaus van Zeyst, he had seven children.
