Bonaventure Vulcanius
Bonaventura Vulcanius (born June 30, 1538 in Bruges , † October 9, 1614 ) was a Flemish scholar, translator and humanist .
He was born the son of Petrus Vulcanius (actually Peter de Smed or de Smit; * around 1503, † 1571), a Flemish humanist and Erasmus friend, in the West Flemish city of Bruges in the Spanish Netherlands . He studied first in Ghent, then medicine at the University of Leuven , a. a. with Johann Otho and finally at the University of Cologne as a student of Georg Cassander philosophy and literature. In 1559 he became secretary to the Spanish cardinal and bishop of Burgos Francisco de Mendoza y Bobadilla (1508–1566). After his death he entered the service of the cardinal's brother, Fernando de Mendoza, archdeacon of Toledo, again until his death in 1570. Via his native city of Bruges, he went back to Cologne, where he first took a position as private tutor and then a professorship for Greek received. At this point, at the latest, there seems to have been a turn to Protestantism. From Cologne he went to Geneva and Basel, where he worked with the printers Henri Estienne (for whom he translated the Alexander story by Arrian ) and Ambrosius Froben . From there in 1577 his way led him to Antwerp, to the house of Philips van Marnix , a confidante of William of Orange , where he worked as a secretary and tutor.
In 1581 he finally received a professorship at the University of Leiden as a professor of Latin and Greek. In the thirty years that he taught there, he was able to count Hugo Grotius and Daniel Heinsius among his students. He worked there with the printer and publisher Franciscus Raphelengius the Elder (1539–1597). Among other things, he published a translation of parts of the Codex Argenteus from the Gothic.
After his death, most of his manuscripts and books went to the Leiden University Library .
