Ambrosius Froben

Ambrosius Froben (* 1537 in Basel ; † 1602 there ; also Ambrosius Frobenius ) was a Swiss printer and publisher.

Life

Ambrosius was a son of the printer Hieronymus Froben and grandson of Johannes Froben , the founder of the Basler Offizin, printer and friend of Erasmus von Rotterdam . Together with his younger brother Aurelius (* 1539) he continued his father's business. He specialized in Hebrew books, working with the scholar Israel Ben Daniel Sifroni from Italy. His most extensive work was an edition of the Talmud that appeared in 1578–81 with great difficulty. For business reasons he declared in Rome in 1581 to the Pope that he had always been a Catholic. In the spring of 1583 he was called to Freiburg im Breisgau as a printer , two years later he returned to Basel, where he passed the business on to his son Hieronymus and son-in-law Jonathan Meyer. In 1587 they sold the Offizin including the venerable company headquarters, the “Haus zum Lufft”, to Leonhard Ostein, and so in 1587 the name Froben was in the Frankfurt exhibition catalog for the last time. Ambrosius Froben became a city official in Basel in 1590 as Birsmeister (conductor of the church in St. Jakob).
