Johan d 'Aulnis de Bourouill (born April 9, 1850 in Groningen , † September 5, 1930 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch economist.

Life

Johan came from a Huguenot family who immigrated to the Netherlands after the Edict of Nantes . He was the son of Baron Jan Karel Ferdinand d'Aulnis de Bourouill (born July 29, 1811 in Olderkerk; † September 9, 1883 in Velp) and his wife Catharina Johanna Quintus (born March 7, 1818 in Groningen; † January 3 1857 ibid). From 1864 attended the grammar school Gorinchem , from 1866 the grammar school in Maastricht and began in September 1868 to study law at the University of Leiden . Here Johannes Theodoor Buys , Joël Emanuel Goudsmit , Anthony Ewoud Jan Modderman and Simon Vissering became his formative teachers. On November 11, 1874 he received his doctorate on the subject of Het inkomen der maatschappij. Eene proeve van theoretical staathuishoudkunde to the Doctor of Law. He then worked as a lawyer in Amsterdam and on May 10, 1875 found a medium-sized civil servant at the Ministry of Finance in The Hague . On January 31, 1878, he was appointed professor of state economy, statistics and state history at the University of Utrecht , which task he took on on March 23, 1878 with the introductory speech Het katheder-Socialisme .

In Utrecht he also took part in the organizational tasks of the university and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1888/89 . He wrote various political and economic contributions in the magazines Themis and De Economist . He worked on various state commissions. He represented the Dutch government in 1896 at the international agricultural congress in Budapest and in 1898 and in 1902 at the international sugar congress in Brussels. He also worked in various learned societies. In 1879 he became an honorary member and in 1893 a full member of the Historical Society in Utrecht, in 1879 a member of the Royal Institute for Language, Country and Ethnology of the Dutch East Indies, 1883 a member of the Society for Dutch Literature in Leiden , and in 1887 a corresponding member of the Societe d ' economie politique in Paris, 1896 member of the Association for State Economy and Statistics in Utrecht, 1899 honorary member of the Cobden Club in London, 1899 honorary member of the Spinoza Association, member of the Dutch Society for the Promotion of Industry, 1892 member of the Dutch Central Commission for Statistics and 1902 Member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences . He was also committed to political tasks. 1891 member of the Utrecht City Council and from 1905 represented the old liberal party kiesvereeniging Groningen in the second chamber of the States General . In 1899 he became a Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lions , in 1904 Officer of the Ordre des Palmes Académiques , in 1909 Commander of the Order of Orange-Nassau and in 1910 Commander of the Legion of Honor . After he had given his last lecture in March 1917, Aulnis de Bourouill said goodbye to the university on June 4, 1917 with the speech De staathuishoudkunde in verband met den wereldoorlog and was retired by royal resolution on September 16, 1917.

Aulnis de Bourouill married on August 9, 1887 in Maartensdijk Elisabeth Wilhelmina Malvina Twiss (born September 16, 1853 in Utrecht; † November 6, 1934 there), the daughter of Willem Twiss (July 3, 1815 in Rotterdam; † February 12, 1871 in Utrecht) and his wife Malvina Elisa Suermondt (born September 30, 1828 in Utrecht; † February 20, 1908 ibid). The daughter Malvina Catharina Clara d'Aulnis de Bourouill (born August 20, 1891 in Utrecht, † May 8, 1892, ibid) comes from the marriage.
