Doug Cowie (born May 1, 1926 in Aberdeen ) is a former Scottish football player who mainly played in defense and occasionally in midfield .

Life

Cowie was 1947-1961 when FC Dundee under contract, has long been team captain and is considered one of the best players in club history the Dees . In the 1948/49 season he was runner- up with the Dark Blues , one point behind the Glasgow Rangers , after losing the last game against FC Falkirk . The seasons 1951/52 and 1952/53 were particularly successful, in which FC Dundee reached the Scottish Cup final of 1952 (which was lost 4-0 to Motherwell FC ) and won the Scottish League Cup twice in a row . Ironically, in the 1961/62 season, immediately after his move to Greenock Morton , FC Dundee won the Scottish championship for the only time ever and advanced to the semi-finals in the European Cup of the following season , where they lost to eventual tournament winners AC Milan .

After two years with Greenock Morton, Cowie ended his active career and took over the post of head coach with the Raith Rovers in the following season 1963/64 . He then moved to the coaching staff of his former club Greenock Morton before becoming a talent scout at Dundee United .

Between 1953 and 1958 Cowie made a total of twenty international appearances for the Scottish national team and took part in two soccer world championships , in which he played two games each: 1954 against Austria (0: 1) and Uruguay (0: 7), in 1958 against Yugoslavia ( 1: 1) and Paraguay (2: 3).
