Johannes Henricus Voorda (born July 8, 1732 in Utrecht , † March 29, 1814 in Leeuwarden ) was a Dutch legal scholar .

Life

The son of Jacobus Voorda and Petronella Beucker studied in Utrecht under his father and continued his studies from 1755 at the University of Leiden . With the treatise de Transmittenda hereditate paterna ex jure Digestorum , he received his doctorate in Utrecht on October 7, 1756, and then settled as a lawyer in Leeuwarden. In 1761 he became a member of the Frisian government and on July 27, 1767 the curators of the University of Utrecht appointed him professor of civil law.

He took up this office on November 12, 1767 with the treatise De juris civilis scientia et interpretatione pulcerrima sed difficili and in 1773/74 he also took part in the university's organizational tasks as rector of the Alma Mater . In laying down the same he gave the speech de his, quae illustris Grotius in prolegomenis ad historiam Gothorum, Vandalorum et Longobardorum contra jus civile Romanum primo loco aculit et de praelatione, quam leges Visigothicae apud quasdam gentes sortitae fuisse ibidem dicuntur .

In the unrest years of the Batavian Republic , he was politically active. He represented patriotic interests and was drafted into the Utrecht Council in 1786. Since the Prussians moved into the Batavian Republic in 1787, he had to flee his offices. This was followed by his formal discharge from his professorship on October 1, 1787. The Utrecht court sentenced him on December 19, 1789 for high treason and expelled him from the country. Then he stayed in Ghent and later in Brussels. In 1795 the events that were unpleasant for him turned. A court in Friesland overturned the judgment of the Utrecht court.

In 1797 he became a professor at the University of Franeker , which position he took up on November 27, 1797 with a speech about the Lombard laws in Italy de Longobardorum legibus in regno Neapolitano jure Justinianeo, non praelatis sed portpositis . In this capacity he took over the rectorate of the Franeker Hochschule in 1798/99, which he resigned on June 10, 1799 with the speech de praelatis in Anglia Juri Justinianeo Normannorum legibus . He retired on June 25, 1802, moved to Leeuwarden in 1809, where he died unmarried at the age of almost 82. Since he outlived his father and brother, his extensive book and manuscript collections came into his possession. After his death these were transferred to the library in Leeuwarden.
