Willem Vogelsang (born August 9, 1875 in Leiden , † December 14, 1954 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch art historian .

Life

Willem Vogelsang was the son of the factory director Ernst Heinrich Vogelsang (* around 1834 in Hagen; † September 13, 1885 in Illenau (Baden)) and his wife Hedwig Anthonia Grothe, who married on May 20, 1874 in Delft (* September 1, 1850 Utrecht; †) December 18, 1877 in Leiden). After attending primary school in Leiden, he continued his education for two years at the secondary school in Freiburg im Breisgau and then at the grammar school in Delft .

Vogelsang studied art history at the Universities of Freiburg , Vienna , Paris and Munich . In Munich he was on 22 July 1898 at Berthold Riehl and Adolf Furtwängler with the theme Dutch miniatures of the later Middle Ages doctorate . After further study trips through Europe, he was admitted as a private lecturer at the University of Amsterdam in October 1900 and gave his inaugural lecture Kuntwetenschappelijde beschouwingen en universitair onderwijs on November 22 of the same year (German: Art history considerations and university teaching ). On October 1, 1903, he also became sub-director of the Dutch Museum of History and Art in Amsterdam.

On April 15, 1907, Vogelsang was appointed professor of aesthetics and art history at the University of Utrecht , which he began on September 23, 1907 with the inaugural speech Aesthetiek en kunstgeschiedenis aan de universiteit (German: Aesthetics and Art History at the University ). He was one of the first in the Netherlands to teach the subject at universities and in 1921 helped the subject to gain wide recognition as a subject. He also became director of the Art History Institute of Utrecht University and served as the university's rector in the 1920/21 academic year .

Vogelsang had written around 275 publications in the specialist journals of the time. They have also been translated into German and French. He was also a member of several art history associations. In 1930 he was appointed Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion , in 1914 he became an Officer of the Order of Orange-Nassau and in 1911 Knight of the Belgian Order of the Crown . He retired on September 17, 1945 and held his farewell lecture on November 12, 1946 on the subject of Veertig jaren kunstgeschiedenis aan de universiteit te Utrecht (German: Forty Years of Art History at the University of Utrecht ).

Vogelsang married the violinist Jeanne Henriette Hijmans (born October 8, 1873 in Rotterdam; † May 30, 1941 in Utrecht) in Amsterdam on March 21, 1901, the daughter of Jacobus Hymans (born November 30, 1843 in Tiel; † May 1 1908 in Amsterdam) and his wife Sara Kerdijk (born September 14, 1850 in Rotterdam, † April 19, 1919 in Bussum). The daughter Jeanna Louise Vogelsang (born February 7, 1902 in Amsterdam; † December 11, 1951 ibid) comes from the marriage and met the gynecologist Johan Gustaaf Salomonson (June 7, 1893 in Amsterdam; †) on August 23, 1923 in Utrecht. 19 October 1962 ibid) married.
