Hendrik Cornelis Dibbits (born September 3, 1838 in Utrecht , † March 19, 1903 ibid) was a Dutch chemist.

Life

Hendrik Cornelis was the son of Lambertus Dibbits (* April 20, 1796 in Amersfoort; † June 1, 1855 in Utrecht) and his wife Adriana Jakoba Susanna Kaas (* 1806 in Rotterdam; † December 26, 1880 in Utrecht). He attended grammar school in Utrecht and in 1856, as a student at the university in his hometown, he was a pupil of Richard van Rees , Christoph Buys Ballot , Gerardus Johannes Mulder , Friedrich Anton Wilhelm Miquel , Pieter Harting and others. On June 25, 1863 he received his doctorate with the thesis De spectraal -analse (freely translated into German: Die Spektralanalyse ) as a doctor of natural sciences. Dibbits was 1861–62, and 1863–64 assistant at the chemical laboratory of the University of Utrecht .

After a short time (1862–1863) as a teacher at the academy in Delft , he taught chemistry at the HBS in Zutphen from 1864–65 and in 1865 in Amsterdam . On April 17, 1876, he was appointed professor of inorganic chemistry and took up this position on June 23 of that year with the speech Eenige scheikundige werkingen als Bewegungs-verschijnselen opgevat (freely translated into German: some chemical effects, understood as movement phenomena ). In addition, Dibbits also took part in the organizational tasks of the Utrecht University and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1894/95 . From 1877 he was a member of the natural history department at the Koninklijke Akademie van Wetenschappen . On September 15, 1902, he left his professorship.

Dibbits married on June 4, 1872 in Utrecht with Catharina Wilhelmina Philippina Schroeder van der Kolk (born September 7, 1840 in Utrecht, † February 13, 1922 in Cannes (France)), the daughter of Jacobus Ludovicus Conradus Schroeder van der Kolk . The marriage remained childless.
