Theobald or Thibaud (* in France ; † November 4, 1188 in Rome ) was a French Benedictine (Cluniac) and cardinal .

In 1169 he is recorded as prior of Saint-Aroul in Crespy in Valois. At that time he was sent to Constantinople on religious matters. After his return he was elected Abbot of Cluny and Abbot General of the Cluniac Order in 1180 . Four years later, Pope Lucius III appointed him . to Cardinal Bishop of Ostia e Velletri ; soon afterwards he had to give up the abbey. He signed papal privileges from May 21, 1184 to October 29, 1188. At the beginning of 1187 he worked as a papal legate in Austria, where he consecrated the Heiligenkreuz monastery on January 31, 1187 .

After the death of Gregory VIII on December 17, 1187, Theobald was elected Pope , but did not accept this election. Pope Clement III wanted to send him as a legate to England in the autumn of 1188 to settle the dispute between the Archbishop of Canterbury and the monks of Christ Church. However, Theobald could not fulfill this mission because he died on November 4th, 1188 in Rome. He was buried in the basilica of S. Paolo fuori le mura .
