Jacob van Hall (born April 14, 1799 in Amsterdam , † March 19, 1859 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch legal scholar .

Life

The son of Maurits Cornelis van Hall and Elisabeth Christina Klinkhamer had visited the Athenaeum in his hometown in 1816 . Here Hermann van Bosscha (1755–1819), David Jacob van Lennep (1774–1853) and Johannes Pieter van Cappelle (1783–1829) were his first teachers who developed his academic foundations. Later, Hendrik Constantijn Cras (1739–1820), Jacobus Henricus van Reenen (1783–1845) and Cornelis Anne den Tex (1795–1854) taught him law . As a candidate for law, he moved to the University of Utrecht on May 3, 1820 , where he obtained the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in 1820 with the dissertation de Tragoedia apud Graecos .

There he answered a question about the confession in criminal matters, received a gold award and published this work under the title Commentatio de origine et progressu quaestionis per tormenta, de pondere confessionis et condemnatione ex sola rei convictione (Utrecht 1822). That was how he first drew attention to himself. After he had defended the first part of his doctoral thesis historico-juridica de magistro navis under his teacher van Reenen on November 13, 1822 , he was awarded his doctorate in both rights on November 19 in Utrecht with the second part of this dissertation.

He then worked as a lawyer in The Hague and was appointed professor of civil law at the Athenaeum in Amsterdam in 1823, succeeding van Reenen. On April 12, 1824 he took office with an Oratio the Meritis Belgarum in excolendo historically juris Romani Studio (Amsterdam 1824) and continued his historical and legal studies there. During that time he had also made a number of publications focusing on the field of commercial law and Roman legal history. With CA van Tex in particular, he had published the first major magazine on Dutch civil law.

The magazine had a huge impact on the legal departments in the first half of the 19th century. In 1848 he was appointed professor of Dutch civil law at the University of Utrecht, which he took up on September 15, 1848 with an Oratio de tuenda colendaque, his potissimum temporibus et in patria qua vivimus, jurisprudentia (Amsterdam 1848). Here he also took part in the organizational tasks of the university and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1855/56. He later became chairman of the literature department at the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences . He was a Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lions and Commander of the Oak Crown .

Hall was married twice. His first marriage was with Susanna Gerardina Vrolik and his second marriage was Maria Theresia Marcella in 1832.
