Henri Ernest Moltzer , also Hendrik Ernst Moltzer (born May 20, 1836 in Wassenaar , † October 25, 1895 in Utrecht ), was a Dutch Dutch scholar and literary scholar.

Life

The son of pastor Marius Nicolaas Jakob Moltzer (born June 8, 1805 in Dronrijp; † April 19, 1893 in Haarlem) and Henriette Jeanette Marie Certon (born July 7, 1803 in Heemstede; † June 22, 1836 in Wassenaar), lost his mother shortly after his birth. Moltzer spent his youth in Haarlem from 1841 , where he received his school and high school education. On September 19, 1855 he enrolled at the University of Leiden to study theology. However, under the influence of Matthias de Vries and Carel Gabriel Cobet , he then turned to studying Dutch literature and law. In these two subjects received his doctorate on April 11, 1862 in Leiden with the thesis Dissertatio de ratione qua ex auctoritate Alarici II, regis Visigothorum, gaii institutionum commentarii in epitomen redacti sunt to the doctorate of law and on the same day with the treatise Geschiedenis van het wereldlijk tooneel in Nederland, de Middeleeuwen received a doctorate in philosophy.

He then found a position at the Dutch Bank in Amsterdam, where he deepened his studies in political economy and Dutch literature. When the Higher Citizens School (HBS) opened in Haarlem in 1864, Moltzer became a lecturer in Dutch language and literature as well as economic policy there. On November 24, 1864, he was appointed professor of Dutch language and literature at the University of Groningen . He took up the professorship on March 30, 1865 with the introductory lecture De nieuwe Richting in de taalkunde . In Groningen he became rector of the university in 1880/81. On June 23, 1882 he was appointed professor of Dutch language and literature at the University of Utrecht , which task he took on on October 26, 1882 with the introductory lecture De historical beoefening der Nederlandsche letteren .

In 1885 he became a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences , was a member of the Society for Dutch Literature in Leiden and a foreign honorary member of the Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie van België voor Wetenschappen en Kunsten . Together with Jan te Winkel (1847–1927) he edited the magazine Bibliographie van Middelnederlandsche letterkunde and wrote several articles in the magazine Spectator . In 1894 he became a Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion . In 1895 he became rector of the alma mater , but died during that term. His son donated his extensive collection of manuscripts and books to the Utrecht University Library. This Moltzeriana library contains more than 3000 volumes.

Moltzer married on June 5, 1862 in Amsterdam Sara Johanna Ploos van Amstel (born January 20, 1835 in Amsterdam, † December 29, 1889 in Utrecht), the daughter of the businessman Jacob Pieter Ploos van Amstel (born July 17, 1803 in Amsterdam; † December 20, 1835 ibid) and Johanna Elisabeth Petronella Moltzer (born March 24, 1802 in Amsterdam; † December 17, 1862 ibid). The two children Johanna Elisabeth Petronella Moltzer (born October 20, 1865 in Groningen; † March 7, 1880 there) and Marius Nicolaas Jacob Moltzer (born June 16, 1863 in Amsterdam; † June 2, 1927 in Alkmaar) were married . July 20, 1891 in Groningen with Catharina Boeke (* December 27, 1867 in Groningen; † June 2, 1932 in Zeist).
