Cornelis Adriaan Bergsma also: Cornelis Adrianus Bergsma (born May 12, 1798 in Leeuwarden , † June 22, 1859 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch chemist, botanist and agricultural scientist.

Life

Cornelis Adrianus was the son of the court clerk at the court of Friesland Willem Bernardus Bergsma (born February 26, 1760 in Dokkum; † October 26, 1820 in Oudeschoot) and his second wife Sjoukje Scheltema (born August 11, 1757 in Franeker; † April 26 1813 in Leeuwarden). From May 17, 1817, he attended the Athenaeum in Franeker and on September 17, 1821, he moved to Utrecht University to study natural sciences . He continued his studies on June 2, 1819 at the University of Leiden and acquired the academic degree of Doctor of Medicine in Utrecht on May 17, 1825 under Jan Isaac Wolterbeek with the work of de Thea . After a brief activity as a doctor in Hoorn , he received on May 1, 1826 a call as associate professor of chemistry and industry at the University of Ghent . He took on this task on July 18, 1826 with the introductory speech over de invloed der vorderingen van de Scheikunde op de Fabrijken .

In 1827 he received an honorary doctorate in philosophical natural history in Ghent, but felt compelled by the events of the Belgian Revolution in 1830 to finish his duties in Ghent in the same year. He returned to the Netherlands, where he was appointed adjunct professor of botany and agriculture at the Utrecht University on March 6, 1831, which position he took over on March 25, 1831. On October 4, 1835, he was appointed full professor of botany and agriculture, which he took over on October 16, 1835. In 1834 the Batavian Society for Experimental Philosophy in Rotterdam became a member and in 1841 he founded the Society for Agriculture and Herbology in Utrecht. He also took part in the organizational tasks of the Utrecht University and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1843/44 . In 1851 he became commander of the Order of the Oak Crown .

Bergsma married on April 25, 1828 in Utrecht with Johanna Theodora van Schermbeek (* October 2, 1803 in Utrecht † May 2, 1876 ibid), the daughter of the notary Pieter Adriaan van Schermbeek (* January 22, 1778 in Utrecht; † 24 August 1833 ibid) and Johanna Justina Ross (born March 25, 1775 in Waalre; † September 24, 1851 in Utrecht). The marriage resulted in nine children, six sons and three daughters. From the children we know:
