Friedrich August Ferdinand Christian Went also: Frits Went (born June 18, 1863 in Amsterdam , † July 24, 1935 in Wassenaar ) was a Dutch botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Went ".

Life

Frits was the eldest son of the stockbroker Johannes Went (born February 19, 1811 in Amsterdam; † November 5, 1879 there) and his wife Johanna Emilie Rosalie Adolfine Susewind (born March 10, 1834 Sayner Hütte (Germany); † January 11, 1917 in Utrecht). After attending elementary school and the high school in his hometown, he began studying biology at the University of Amsterdam in 1880 . Here he became a student of Corneille Antoine Jean Abraham Oudemans (1825-1906) and Hugo de Vries (1848-1935). On October 2, 1886, he received his doctorate in Amsterdam with the thesis De jongste toestanden de vacuolen (German: The youngest state of vacuolen ) as a doctor of natural sciences. He then worked as a teacher in Dordrecht , was a teacher at the grammar school in The Hague and became director of an agricultural research facility for the sugar industry in Kagok-Tegal in West Java. On May 18, 1896, he took over the professorship for botany and director of the Botanical Garden of the University of Utrecht , which task he took up on September 21 of the same year with the introductory speech Botanische problemen der laatste 15 years (German: Botanical problems of the last fifteen years ). He stayed here until his retirement in 1933 and served as rector in 1905/06 . He is best known for his studies of plant hormones, especially the role of auxin in phototropism .

Went was awarded an honorary doctorate from Cambridge University and was a member of several scientific societies, including the Royal Society , the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences , the Prussian Academy of Sciences , the Royal Bohemian Society of Sciences , the Botanical Society of Japan and the Kungliga Vetenskaps-Societeten i Uppsala . In 1933 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .

Went married on July 16, 1902 in Amsterdam with Catharina Jacomina Tonckens (born June 22, 1877 in Groningen, † August 1965), the daughter of the governor of Suriname Warmolt Tonckens († September 9, 1922 in Utrecht). There are three sons and two daughters from the marriage. From the children we know:
