Life

The son of Johannes Straten came from a respected family. He had studied medicine at the University of Leiden under Pieter Pauw (1564–1617) and Otto van Heurnius (1577–1652). Then he became a physician in his hometown. On June 18, 1621 he was given the right to give anatomical lectures, and on March 26, 1636 , when the University of Utrecht was founded, he became professor of anatomy at the same. He gave the inaugural address Quam jucunda utilis et necessaria sit nostra cognitio per anatomist and soon set up a Collegium Practicum for teaching practical medicine. Thus, after the University of Padua , Utrecht became one of the first universities in Europe where medical instruction took place at an associated clinic. On October 6, 1641 he became the first full professor of the medical faculty, which was linked to a doubling of his salary.

After he had headed the Utrecht Alma Mater as rector in 1643/44 , he was appointed personal physician to Friedrich Heinrich of Orange in 1646 while retaining his professorship. For this he moved to The Hague , where he also met the subsequent regents Wilhelm II of Orange and Wilhelm III. of Orange served as personal physician. He turned down offers of a professorship at the University of Leiden. Instead, he returned to Utrecht, stood up for the communal interests of his native city and became mayor and councilor on April 17, 1674. He was also active as a city judge in 1676 and a member of the General Pension Chamber in 1677 .

He died as heir on Willeskop and Kort-Heeswijk .
