Banknotes

The Stelo (dt. "Star"; plural: Steloj) has been a currency unit of the Esperanto speakers since 1959 , who had the aim of creating a unified world currency. Attempts to establish an earlier currency unit, the Speso , with derived units such as the Spesmilo, were foiled by World War I. For a time the Universal League (in Esperanto: Universala Ligo ), the world federal arm of the Esperanto movement, issued banknotes and coins in Steloj and made attempts to base the Stelo on existing currencies on the basis of the relative purchasing power of the various nations. In 2012, coins (tokens) with a face value of 1, 3 and 10 steloj made of plastic were minted. The circulation is 3000 each. They are currently used at several youth Esperanto congresses, e.g. B. at 9a JES 2017/18. Currently (beginning of 2018) around 1 € = 4 steloj. To mark the 150th anniversary of the birthday of René de Saussure (1868–1943), a Steloj coin medal was first published in fine silver 999/1000 at the end of 2017. Nominal value: 100 Steloj. Mass: 1 ounce fine silver (31.1 g). Surface PP. Diameter 37 mm. Production: Mint Austria AG.
