Johannes Horthemels (* 1698 in Middelburg ; † June 25, 1776 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch philosopher and Reformed theologian.

Life

The son of Cornelis Horthemels and his wife Barbara van Weerlink were baptized on July 6th. He came from a family that had established itself in the 17th century book trade in Paris and Middelburg. In 1719 he moved to the University of Utrecht , where on June 14, 1720 he wrote the philosophical treatise de natura dei, quam, praeside deo ter opt. Max. under Johannes Luyts (1655–1721) received his doctorate in philosophy. He then concentrated on studying theological sciences, for which he went to the University of Leiden on September 12, 1721 . After receiving his doctorate in theology in 1723, he took over a pastorate in Biggekerke on February 21, 1724 and was pastor in Westzaan from November 5, 1730 . On July 30, 1742, the curators of the Utrecht University appointed him professor of philosophy.

He took this office on October 22, 1742 with the Rede de libertate philosophandi debita cum modestia circa revelata . In that capacity he was the last "Aristotelian" Utrecht professor who turned against Cartesianism . The basis was his own view, which arose from his religiosity and was based on the doctrine of the immortality of the soul. He also took part in the organizational tasks of the Utrecht University and he was rector of the Alma Mater in 1744/45 and 1765/66 . While he had given the speech de theocratiae moralis et obligationis creatu arum rationalium ex indubilata supremi numinis existentia vinculo indissolubili during his first office phase , he could not give a normal rectorate speech during his second office phase because he fell ill. This was done by his colleague G. Bonnet.

Little is known about his private circumstances. A daughter of Anna Constantia Horthemels married the preacher in Hoorn Jacob Dermout. From this marriage comes a not insignificant son.
