Johan Hendrik Gallée (born September 9, 1847 in the village of Vorden in the municipality of Bronckhorst ; † February 3, 1908 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch Germanist, Anglist and Dutchist.

Life

Johan Hendrik Gallée was born as the son of Mayor Johannes Hermannus Gallée (1822–1901) and his wife Neeltje van Olst (1820–1890). His grandfather, father and brother became mayors of his birthplace. After attending school in Achterhoek, he moved to high school in Zutphen when he was thirteen . On September 28, 1866 he enrolled to study literature at the University of Leiden . Here Matthias de Vries , Hendrik Kern , Carel Gabriel Cobet , Willem George Pluygers (1812–1880) and Robert Jacob Fruin became his formative teachers. On June 27, 1873 he received his doctorate with the treatise De dramatic vertoningen in de middeleeuwen (freely translated into German: The dramatic tone development in the Middle Ages ) under de Vries to the doctorate of philosophy.

From 1872 he was a teacher of Dutch language and literature at the grammar school in Haarlem and from 1879 in the same capacity at the grammar school in Utrecht. In 1881 he was appointed lecturer for Old Germanic and comparative linguistic studies at the University of Utrecht and on June 23, 1882 he was appointed professor for Gothic language , basics of Sanskrit , basics of comparative Indo-European linguistics, general German and in particular Anglo-Saxon and Middle High German. He took on this task on September 22nd with the introductory speech De invloed van de taalstudie op het gebied der letteren en op de mythologie (freely translated into German: The influence of language studies in the field of literature and mythology ).

As such, he studied the origins and history of the various Dutch dialects. Above all, he also dealt with High German, Middle High German and the Anglicist language. In addition, he took part in the organizational tasks of the university and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1890/91 . He laid down this task with the speech De wording van het woord en de ontwikkeling der taal (freely translated into German: The origin of the word and the development of language ). He became a member of the Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie van België voor Wetenschappen en Kunsten , a member of the Society for Dutch Literature in Leiden and was a knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion .

Gallée married on July 17, 1873 in The Hague Wibbina Geertsema (1850-1937), daughter of Johan Herman Geertsema and his wife Arendina Wichers. There is a daughter from the marriage.
