Charles Henri Hubert Spronck (born February 18, 1858 in Beek, Limburg , † December 3, 1932 in Zeist ) was a Dutch medic.

Life

Charles Henri Hubert came from a Catholic family. He was the son of a doctor Joannes Henricus Agidius Spronck (* July 24, 1828 in Maastricht; † February 17, 1902 in Utrecht) and his wife Anna Hubertina Loduwina van Hees (* September 16, 1821 in Nieuwstadt; † January 13, 1886 in Beek). After attending grammar school in Maastricht , he began studying medicine at the University of Amsterdam in 1876 . In 1879 he interrupted his studies in Amsterdam to follow the lectures given by Louis Pasteur in Paris. After returning to the Netherlands, he passed his doctoral examination in Utrecht and his doctoral examination in 1882. He then became assistant to Casper Hendrik Kuhn (1848-1926) in Amsterdam , under which he began to work on October 1, 1886Over ischaemie van het ruggemerg (German: About ischaemia from the spinal cord ).

As early as January 19, 1886, he became lecturer in anatomy at the University of Utrecht and on September 24, 1888, professor of pathology and pathological anatomy there, for which he gave the introductory speech De onsterfelijkheid in de levende natuur (German: Immortality in living nature) . During that time he dealt with etiology and bacteriology. So he examined the causes of cholera , leprosy , dysentery , diphtheria , tetanus and tuberculosis . Among other things, Spronck developed a vaccine against rabies in 1914 . As a pioneer of serology in the Netherlands, he received an extraordinary professorship for serology at the Utrecht University in 1920 and founded the serological institute there. When he began his new role, he published the speech De wetenschap der immuniteit en hair vruchten voor de profylaxis en therapy der infectieziekten (German: The science of immunity and its fruits for the prophylaxis and therapy of infectious diseases ).

He also participated in the organizational tasks of the Utrecht University. In the academy year 1903/04 he was rector of the Alma Mater , for which he published the rector's speech Enkele tuberculosis-vraagpunten in het licht van de pathologische anatomie (German: Some tuberculosis questions in the light of pathological anatomy). Spronck worked as a member of the medical council of Gelderland and Utrecht, became a knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion and in 1903 a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences . In 1923 he retired from his professorship and spent the last years of his life in Zeist.

Spronck married on April 7, 1891 in Houthem with Marie Rosalie Raphael Felicie Josephine Neve (born February 26, 1865 in Houthem, † October 30, 1946 in Leidschendam), the daughter of the professor of philosophy at the University of Leuven Emile Gabriel Benoit Nève ( * April 12, 1819 in Rijssel; † February 9, 1889 in Houthem) and his wife Agathe Jeanne Marie Elisabeth Collard, who was married on May 26, 1863 in Maastricht (* April 20, 1827 in Susteren; † March 26, 1899 in Houthen). The marriage has two sons and a daughter. From the children we know:

  • Elisabeth Anne Marie Felicie Augusta Spronck (born March 15, 1893 in Utrecht, † December 8, 1985 in The Hague)
  • Paul Henri Hermann Spronck (born December 4, 1899 in Utrecht) married. October 2, 1930 in Waalre (closed August 29, 1936) with Alexa Wilhelmina Regina Swane (* around 1904 in Waalre)
