Gisbert Matthias Elsner (also: Gijsbertus Elsnerus ; born April 1, 1698 in Goch ; † July 7, 1775 in Jutphaas ) was a German Reformed theologian.

Life

The son of pastor Alexander Wilhelm Elsner had completed a degree in theological sciences at the University of Duisburg in 1715 . After completing his studies, he was called to parish ministry in Heumen and Malden in September 1719 . To this end, he completed his theological exam in October of the same year and was invested in this office in November. In 1723 he went to Brook and Ubbergen as a pastor , in October 1725 he received an appointment to the Groesbeek parish and in 1728 he was pastor in Zaltbommel . In 1737 he went to Utrecht as a pastor, where the curators of the Utrecht University took him on 10 (15). June 1739 appointed associate professor of theology at the University of Utrecht .

After he had been appointed doctor of theology on September 10, 1739, he took up the post entrusted to him on September 15, 1739 with the speech De diversis, sed non aversis in unico corpore Christi summi capitis membris . When Hieronymus Simons van Alphen died, he was appointed full professor of theology for New Testament exegesis on July 22, 1743, which office he took up on September 16, 1743 with the speech De excellentia adultorum, qui in verbo justitiae propter habitum exercitatos habent sensus, prae exilitate infantium, lacte elementariae doctrinae (Utrecht 1743). He was also involved in the organizational tasks of the Utrecht University and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1745/46 and 1761/62 .

For this purpose, he wrote the abdication speeches de sponsalibus Christum inter et ecclesiam, nullis unquam malis dirimendis (Van het huwelijk, tusschen Christ en de kerk, door gene ongevallen ooit te verbreken) (1746) and de conjunctione tuta atque felici, quae gentibus feris et noxiis intercedet cum grege Dei, sub vexillo Jesu Christi (Utrecht 1762). He died on his summer residence in Jutphaas on the night of July 6th to 7th, 1775. His body was brought to Utrecht and quietly buried.
