Hendrik Wefers Bettink
Hendrik Wefers Bettink (born March 17, 1839 in Utrecht ; † November 19, 1921 there ) was a Dutch pharmacologist.
Life
Hendrik was the son of the pharmacist Dirk Cornelis Wefers Bettink (born January 20, 1798 in Utrecht; † February 1, 1875 ibid) and his wife Johanna Paulina Schonenberg (born March 23, 1809 in Rotterdam; † October 18, 1896 in Utrecht). After completing the French elementary school, he began an apprenticeship as a pharmacist at the age of fourteen. After he had finished his apprenticeship training in June 1859, he continued his education and began studying chemistry at the University of Utrecht in 1865 . His formative teacher in chemistry was Eduard Mulder , at Buys Ballot he dealt with mathematics, van Rees taught him physics, Harting introduced him to zoology and he attended Miquel's lectures on botany.
Since he had to secure his livelihood, he took a position as a teacher of natural history at a private girls' school in Utrecht during his studies in 1866 and did his doctorate on January 18, 1870 with Mulder on the subject of Onderzoekingen over de oplosbaarheid van CO2 in water, en den invloed , dien sommige zouten daarop uitoefenen (German: Investigations into the solubility of carbon dioxide in water, and what influence some salts have on it ) to the Doctor of Philosophy. In 1868 he went as a teacher at the higher middle school (HBS) in Sappemeer , in 1870 became director of the day and evening school in Utrecht and from 1876 worked at the higher middle school for the training of military pharmacists for the Dutch East Indies in Utrecht. In 1877 he became the first professor of pharmacy and toxicology at the Utrecht University, which task he took on with the introductory speech Het verleden, het heden en de toekomst der pharmacie (German: The past, the present and the future of pharmacy ).
As such, he founded the Pharmaceutical Institute in Utrecht in 1883 and also took part in the university's organizational tasks as the rector of the Alma Mater in 1899/1900 . Together with Matthijs Salverda (1840–1886) he wrote a textbook Over de kennis der Natuur (German: About knowledge of nature), as well as a large number of subject-specific articles in the scientific journals of his time. Wefers Bettink became an honorary member of the Dutch Society for Pharmacy and other pharmacological associations abroad. For example, on May 25, 1901, as a corresponding member of the Académie royale de Médecine of Belgium. He was a member of the city council of Utrecht, was knight of the Order of the Dutch Lions and an officer of the Order of Oranje Nassau in 1900 . He also held an extraordinary professorship at the University of Amsterdam . On October 1, 1908, Wefers Bettink retired from his professorship.
