Cornelis Gerrit Nicolaas de Vooys (born May 26, 1873 in Gouda , † November 6, 1955 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch Netherlandist.

Life

Cornelis Gerrit Nicolaas was the eldest son of the goldsmith Gerrit Cornelis de Vooys (born March 1, 1847 in Gouda; † July 19, 1916 there) and his wife Neeltje Kruijt (born June 29, 1850 in Gouda; † May 26, 1933 in Oosterbeek ) born. His parents' house seems to have been quite stimulating, because his brother Isaac Pieter de Vooys (born February 3, 1875 in Gouda, † February 19, 1955 in Arnhem) became professor of mechanical technology at the Technical College in Delft. After attending high school and high school in Gouda, Vooys began studying Dutch literature at Leiden University in 1893 . It was here that Jacob Verdam , Jan ten Brink and Pieter Jacob Cosijn in particular became his formative teachers. Vooys earned his doctorate in literature in 1900 with the work Middel-Nederlandse legenden en exemplen . He then became a teacher in Rotterdam , Leeuwarden and in 1902 switched to teaching at the grammar school in Assen . In 1915 he was appointed professor of Dutch language and literature at the University of Utrecht , which task he began with the inaugural address Wording en bewording van letterkundige taal .

Vooys had written numerous publications and campaigned for a spelling reform in the Netherlands. In the trade journal De Nieuwe Taalgrids he founded , he often worked as an editor of specialist articles. His numerous publications have also found recognition in the scientific world. So in 1925 he became a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences and later an honorary foreign member of the Flemish Koninklijke Academie voor Nederlandse Taal- en Letterkunde . In the academy year 1932/33 Vooys was elected rector of the Utrecht Alma Mater , in which capacity he gave the rector's speech De studie van de woordbeteekenis on March 18, 1933, on the 297th anniversary of the Utrecht University . On October 7, 1935 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Ghent , on October 20, 1947 an honorary doctorate from the University of Leuven and on March 22, 1952 he received the honoris causa dignity of the South African Witwatersrand University in Johannesburg. In 1946 he retired from his professorship, but remained active in literature. Vooys died as a result of a traffic accident that occurred on October 27, 1955. His body was buried in Utrecht on November 10th of the same year.
