Jacob Verdam or Jakob Verdam (born January 22, 1845 in Amsterdam , † July 19, 1919 in Leiden ) was a Dutch Netherlandist .

Life

Jacob was the son of the tobacco dealer Hendrik Verdam (* April 28, 1819 in Mijdrecht; † 1854) and his wife Mijntje Parson (* around 1819 in Amsterdam † 1849), who was married on April 16, 1840. In early youth he lost his parents, so that he grew up with his grandfather, the Mijdrecht mayor Jacob Verdam. He received his education at the Latin School in Amsterdam, where Petrus Epekema (born February 20, 1799 in Enkhuizen, † June 15, 1871 in Ammersfort) exerted lasting influence on him. In 1865 he moved to Leiden University to study literature. Here Matthias de Vries , Willem Georg Pluijgers (born February 18, 1812 in Zwolle, † April 30, 1880 in Leiden), Carel Gabriel Cobet , Robert Jacob Fruin and Johan Hendrik Caspar Kern became his formative teachers.

After he had passed his candidate exam in 1868, he became a teacher of classical languages ​​at the municipal grammar school in Leiden in 1869 and received his doctorate in philosophy on May 14, 1872 with the thesis Tekstcritiek van de middelnederlandsche schrijvers (freely translated into German: text criticism by the Middle Dutch authors ) Literature. He became a member, chairman and on June 12, 1918 honorary member of the Maatschappij der Nederlandsche Letterkunde in Leiden (freely translated into German: Society of Dutch Literature ). In 1883 he became a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences , was a member of the Utrecht Historical Society, in 1887 he became an honorary foreign member of the Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie van België voor Wetenschappen en Kunsten and in 1909 he became a Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion . In 1908/09 he also took part in the organizational tasks of the Leiden University as the rector of the Alma Mater . At the age of 70, he resigned his professorship on June 25, 1915 and retired on September 20, 1915. Verdam had made a number of contributions in the field of Dutch linguistic research and wrote a large number of specialist articles. The Middelnederlandsch Woordenboek , which he initiated and which could not be completed until after his death and which JJ van der Voort received a supplement in 1983, is significant .

Verdam married on July 19, 1872 in Haarlem with Barta Johanna von Ketwich (born December 11, 1840 in Zwolle, † August 19, 1926 in Leiden), the daughter of Hermanus Diderikus van Ketwich (born December 26, 1791 in Opheusden; † March 22, 1851 in Zwolle) and his wife Catharina Elisabeth van Monnom (born June 23, 1796 in Amsterdam, † April 17, 1843 in Zwolle).
