Jan Frederik van Beeck Calkoen (also: Beek ; born January 5, 1772 in Groningen ; † March 26, 1811 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch mathematician and astronomer .

Life

The son of the then preacher in Groningen, who later worked in Amsterdam, with the name Wilhelmus Jabes Calkoen and his wife Wilhelmina Maria Verborcht, took the name Beeck, to the pleasure of his great-uncle, who was the brother of his grandmother Jan Frederik van Beeck, who was mayor of Utrecht was. After studying the ancient languages ​​at the Latin school in Amsterdam, he went to Utrecht University on November 14, 1795 . Here he enjoyed lectures by Sebald Rau and Christoph Saxe in philosophy, archeology and history as well as by Johannes Theodorus Rossijn and others in natural and philosophical subjects at the philosophical faculty . He also attended Gisbert Bonnet's theological lectures as he intended to follow his father's example and become a pastor.

Above all, however, Johann Friedrich Hennert exercised a great influence on him at that time , so that he decided to deviate from the theological direction and complete a degree in mathematical and astronomical sciences. He is also said to have completed studies at the University of Groningen and received his doctorate here in May 1797 with the treatise De horologiis veterum sciothericis cui accedit theoria solariorum horam azimuthum et altitudinem solis una exhibentium . In order to expand his knowledge of astronomy , he completed an educational trip to Germany. Here he met Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock in Hamburg in May 1799 , was in Leipzig, in Göttingen with Bernhard von Lindenau , in Jena, in Berlin with Johann Elert Bode and eight weeks in Gotha with Franz Xaver von Zach .

On May 31, 1799, he was appointed as an associate professor of natural philosophy and mathematics, specializing in astronomy and hydraulics, at the University of Leiden , which he held on October 5, 1799 with the speech over de bevalligheid en het nut der Mathematische leerwijze, naar de natuur ingerigt . On May 4, 1808 he became a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences . From November 30, 1798, he was a corresponding member of the Provinciaal Utrechtsch Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschappen, 1802 consultant of the Batavian Society for Experimental Philosophy (Bataafsch Genootschap der Proefondervindelijke Wijsbegeerte), and since 1799 a member of the Dutch Society of the Sciences (Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen) and on November 17, 1802 he became a member of the Zealand Society of Sciences (Zeeuwsch Genootschap der Wetenschappen). In 1804 he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . In his capacity as a Utrecht university professor, he had also participated in their organizational tasks and was the rector of the Alma Mater in 1810/11 , whereupon he died shortly afterwards of his constantly flagging health. His publications include several books on shipbuilding, nautical charts and navigation, and an article on the reflection of light in mirrors. The Felix Meritis Society in Amsterdam intended to make him head of the observatory.

Calkoen was married to Isabella Antonia Lucretia van Westrenen (* around 1779; † October 3, 1846 in Cothen), daughter of Aarnoud Jan van Westrenen, from which marriage had four children. A daughter and two sons survived the father. Well known are Wilhelmina Maria van Beeck Calkoen (* 1804) married Sjuck van Welderen Rengers on August 22, 1823 in Utrecht (* November 8, 1799 in Groningen; † October 22, 1870 in Leeuwarden). Wilhelmus Jabes van Beeck Calkoen (born September 10, 1806; † August 21, 1895 in Cothen) Arnoud Jan van Beeck Calkoen (born April 13, 1805 in Leiden; † December 16, 1874 in Utrecht).
