George Willem Vreede
George Willem Vreede (born April 14, 1809 in Tilburg , † June 29, 1880 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch legal scholar and legal historian.
Life
George Willem was the son of Paulus Vreede (born June 29, 1779 Emmerik; † April 23, 1842 in Tilburg) and Franziska Charlotte von Abel (born May 17, 1783 in Stuttgart; † February 1, 1858 ibid). In 1821 he attended grammar school in Leiden , in 1825 he began his law studies at the University of Ghent and continued at the University of Leuven in 1827 . The events of the Belgian Revolution forced him to leave the Belgian territories. So he returned to Leiden, where he enrolled at the university there on March 21, 1831 and received his doctorate in law on March 25, 1831 with the treatise De origine atgue incrementis libertatis Anglorum . He then worked as a lawyer in The Hague and from September 1832 in the same capacity in Gorinchem . On February 5, 1841, he was appointed professor of constitutional and international law at the University of Utrecht , began the task assigned to him on March 29, 1841 and gave his introductory speech De Anonio Matthaeo primo iuris criminalis in academia ultrajectina doctore .
Vreede had made a name for himself primarily in the field of Dutch legal history and the history of diplomacy. Politically, he established himself as an opponent of Wilhelm I of the Netherlands and Johan Rudolf Thorbeckes . As a university lecturer in Utrecht, he also took part in the university's organizational tasks and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1845/46 and 1860/61 . When resigning from his duties, he gave the speech De studio iuris publici in patria nostra theoretico in 1846 and in 1861 the speech De juris publici et gentium praeceptis a liberae Europae civitatibus adversus vim ac dolum potentiorum forliter tuendo . In 1850 he became a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences . In 1879 he was retired from his professorship.

Vreede married Anna Catharina Hoff (born November 11, 1815 in Leeuwarden, † April 29, 1877 in Utrecht) on July 28, 1837 in Oirschot, the daughter of Albert Hoff and Johanna de Jong. The marriage resulted in nine children. We know of these:
