Aria Noordtzij

Arie Noordtzij (born April 29, 1871 in Nijehaske , † June 21, 1944 in Lutry ) was a Dutch Reformed theologian.

Life

Arie was born as the son of the pastor and later professor in Kampen Maarten Noordtzij (born October 19, 1840 in Rotterdam; † February 9, 1915 in Kampen) and his wife Frouwiena de Cock (born October 2, 1847 in 's-Hertogenbosch; † 25 November 1922 in Kampen). After attending the Kampen grammar school , he took up theological training at the theological school in Kampen in 1889 and enrolled at the University of Leiden on October 2, 1890 to continue his education. In Leiden, among others, Jan Pieter Nicolaas Land , Henricus Oort and Cornelis Petrus Tiele became his teachers. On June 4, 1896, Noordtzij received his doctorate in Leiden unter Oort with the work Het Hebreeuwse voorzetsel 'al (German: The Hebrew preposition' al ) as a doctor of theology.

He then worked as a teacher at the reformed grammar school in Kampen, where he taught Hebrew, Dutch, French and Dutch history. In 1902 he became a lecturer at the theological school in Kampen, where he gave lectures on Hebrew, archeology, biblical textual criticism, Dutch language and literature. On May 24, 1912, Noordtzij was appointed to the theological faculty of the University of Utrecht , where on September 23, 1912 he took over the professorship of the history of the Israelite religion and its literature, as well as the interpretation of the Old Testament . For this purpose, he gave the introductory speech De oud-testamentische godsdienstopenbaring en het oud-oostersche leven (German: The Old Testament divine revelation and the ancient oriental life ). Noordtzij wrote many theological works.

Has written number of publications on a number of trips to Israel. He wrote numerous articles for the reformed theological journal (ndl: ref. Theol. Tijdschrift. Thel. Studiën ) and Teylers's Theol. Tijdschrift . For many years he was a member and chairman of the reformed school association and, after his resignation, honorary chairman. He was also chairman of the Federation of Christian High Schools and Higher Civic Schools. In the academy year 1926/27 he was elected rector of the Utrecht Alma Mater , for which he gave the rector's speech Het probleem van het Oude Testament (German: The Problem of the Old Testament ) on March 26, 1927, on the anniversary of the university . On October 1, 1931, he became an honorary professor in Sárospatak, Hungary, and was named a Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion . In 1936 he resigned his professorship for health reasons and moved to Switzerland.

Noordtzij was married twice. His first marriage was on August 16, 1900 in Schiedam with Marie Vrijland (born January 10, 1874 in Schiedam, † April 1, 1901 in Kampen), the daughter of Leendert Vrijland and his wife Grietje van der Most. The marriage remained childless. His second marriage was on April 7, 1903 in Aubonne (Vaud, Switzerland) with Louise Aimée Alice Peter (January 7, 1882 in Aubonne; † January 27, 1963 in Lausanne), the daughter of Jules Adolphe Peter and his wife Frederique Louisa Grivel, a. The marriage has two sons and a daughter. From the children we know:
