Cornelis Petrus Tiele (born December 16, 1830 in Leiden ; † January 11, 1902 ) was a Dutch Reformed theologian, church historian, orientalist and theological philosopher.

Life

Cornelis Petrus was the second son of the bookseller and printer Cornelius Tiele (1794–1847) and his wife Maria Johanna van Kampen (1809–1846). He had attended school and grammar school in Leiden. In October 1848 he became a student at the Remonstrantenseminar of the Athenaeum Illustre Amsterdam . In 1853 he became pastor in Moordrecht and in 1856 pastor in Rotterdam . Through various activities of literary content he gained a lot of reputation during that time. In 1872 he received an honorary doctorate in theology from the University of Leiden and in January 1873 was appointed professor of the history of religion and homiletics at the Remonstrant seminary in Leiden. He took on this task on February 13, 1873 with the inaugural speech De plaats van de godesdiensten der Naturvolken in die godsdienstgeschiedenis .

On September 10, 1877 he became professor of the history of religion at the University of Leiden , which task he was given on October 10, 1877 with the speech De vrucht der Assyriologie voor de verglijk. Business d. god services took over. In addition, on May 29, 1881, he was given the chair of the history of teaching about God and on February 16, 1891 he became professor of theological philosophy. In his capacity as a university professor in Leiden, he also took part in the organizational tasks of the university and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1892/93 . He retired from his professorship on April 6, 1901 and retired on September 16, 1901.

Tiele had also appeared as a poet, under the pseudonym Dr. Pronius: Augustus Borneman and the published his . He was best known for his comparative work on the church history of Egypt and Mesopotamia. At the side of Abraham Kuenen and Johannes Henricus Scholten, he was a modern representative of Dutch theology of his time. He was a member of many domestic and foreign learned societies. He was born on May 16, 1882 a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences, he was an honorary member of the Lib Archeology in London, honorary member of the Lib. Literature in America, corresponding member of the Royal Asiatic Society in London, corresponding member of the American Oriental Society , member of the American Philosophical Society in London and in 1896 Grifford lecturer at the University of Edinburgh .

He has also received many awards over the course of his life. In 1888 he received an honorary doctorate in philosophy from the University of Bologna and in 1899 an honorary doctorate from the University of Dublin . He became Commander of the Order of Orange-Nassau , Officer of the Order of the Oak Crown , Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion and Officer of the Order of the Leopold of Belgium .

Tiele was married twice. His first marriage was in 1853 with Johanna Maria Henriëtta Backer (1831–17 August 1885 in Leiden), the daughter of Meinhardus Backer and Henrietta Johanna Mouwe. He concluded his second marriage on August 28, 1890 in Haastrecht with Antoinetta Sophia Ruychaver (1840-1907). The marriages were childless.
