Moordrecht ( ) is a village in the Netherlands , province of South Holland . In January 2017 it had 8,395 inhabitants on a total area of 12.73 km². Since January 1st 2010 it belongs to the municipality of Zuidplas .
Location and economy
The village is located on the north bank of the Hollandsche IJssel , opposite Gouderak (ferry). The nearest town is Gouda , which is 5 km to the northeast. Some of the residents of Moordrecht are commuters who work in Gouda. Many of the villagers are farmers or work in the many small businesses in the area.
history
The place name does not mean: right to murder, but: river crossing ( drecht ) in the moor . Moordrecht emerged as the so-called Ambachtsheerlijkheid (authority) after the dike was dyed in the 13th century. The village was the scene of two battles: during the civil war of the so-called Hoeken and Codfish (1489) and in the Eighty Years War (1574). At that time, the manufacture of ropes and peat extraction were of economic importance . This created a lake in the hinterland that was drained in 1836. In 1990 the Outlaw Motorcycle Gang , Satudarah MC was founded here.
