Jan Pieter Nicolaas Land (born April 23, 1834 in Delft , † April 30, 1897 in Arnhem ) was a Dutch orientalist and philosopher.

Life

Jan Pieter Nicolaas was born as the third child and eldest son of the doctor Axel Lourents Land († April 1841 in Leeuwarden) and Catharina Elizabeth Hulsbeek. His ancestors came from Norway. After the death of his father, his mother moved to Dokkum , where Land attended the day school, then he switched to the Herrenhutschule in Neuwied in 1843 and to the municipal grammar school in Leeuwarden in 1846 . In 1850 he began studying philosophy and theology at the University of Leiden . Here he had attended the lectures of Reinhart Dozy , Theodoor Willem Johannes Juynboll , Abraham Kuenen , Carel Gabriel Cobet , Frederik Kaiser , Jan Hendrik Stuffken and Johannes Henricus Scholten . On October 5, 1857, he was presented with an examination and interpretation of the Old Testament Disputatio de carmine Jacobi, Gen. XLIX to the doctor of theology doctorate . After receiving his doctorate, he continued his studies at the University Library in Leiden and at the British Museum in London.

In 1859 he moved to Amsterdam, where he became secretary of the Dutch Bible Society. In 1864 he became professor of philosophy and oriental languages ​​at the Athenaeum Illustre Amsterdam , which task he took on on October 10, 1864 with a speech about the zamenhang tusschen weten en looped . His daughter Louise Land (born February 12, 1874 in Leiden) is known from his marriage to Wilhelmina Cremer (born July 26, 1844 in Zwolle, † 1919) on July 7, 1870 in Arnhem.
