Jan Hendrik Stuffken

Jan Hendrik Stuffken (born May 14, 1801 in Amsterdam , † May 10, 1881 in Arnhem ) was a Dutch theologian and philosopher.

Life

Jan Hendrik was the son of pastry chef Rutger Stuffken (born January 17, 1762 in Voorst; † October 1, 1813 in Amsterdam) and his wife Dirkje van Hulshergen (* 1765 in Hattem; † September 22, 1826 in Amsterdam). In October 1820 he attended the Athenaeum Illustre Amsterdam and enrolled on June 5, 1822 at the University of Leiden , where he wanted to study literature and theology. Here he attended lectures by Johannes van Voorst , Johann Clarisse , Nicolaas Christiaan Kist , Lucas Suringar , Johannes Henricus van der Palm , Joannes Willmet (1750–1835) and Wessel Albertus van Hengel .

On June 24, 1828 he received his doctorate in theology with the treatise Theodosii Magni in rem Christianam meritis . After he had become a candidate for the pastorate, he became pastor in Haaften on September 14, 1828 . He had subsequently written several articles in the specialist journals of his time, and was therefore appointed on September 9, 1845 by royal resolution to professor of reflective philosophy and literature at the University of Leiden. His teaching assignment included logic, metaphysics, and history of philosophy. He took up this office on March 16, 1846 with the speech de eo quod in academia spectat studium Philosophiae . In this capacity he also participated in the organizational tasks of the university and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1858/59 .

He put this task down with the speech de modo quo experientia omnis nostrae cognitionis fons sit habendus unicus . On April 17, 1840, he became a corresponding member of the Royal Dutch Institute of Sciences in Amsterdam . His critical stance on theological conception in the Netherlands did not enable him to enter the theological faculty of the Leiden University. On July 15, 1871, he was retired at his own request by royal resolution and left the university on August 1 of the same year. He later went to Arnhem, where he eventually died.
