Haaften is a dike village and main square of the former municipality of Haaften in the Dutch province of Gelderland , which has belonged to the municipality of Neerijnen since the municipal reform in 1978 and has been part of the municipality of West Betuwe since 2019 .

Haaften is located on the Waal River . At the beginning of 2007 the place had the largest population in the former municipality of Neerijnen with 3021 inhabitants.

Haaften has an overnight port for ships up to 105 meters and there also an overnight place for trucks. The port has space for 25 ships and is operated by Rijkswaterstaat .
Haaften is on provincial road 830, which leads from Gorinchem to Geldermalsen. Via the A2 and A15 are Utrecht , 's-Hertogenbosch and Rotterdam to reach.

history
- Around 960 Haaften (as Hoaftens) is mentioned in a document, namely in the listing of the possessions of the St. Maartenskerk in Utrecht , the predecessor church of today's cathedral .
- Around 1300 Johan de Cocq received the village as a dowry.
- 1672: A French army devastated the Goudenstein castle . Only a damaged corner tower with a few pieces of wall remains, which was restored in 1968.
- June 9, 1866: The "Great Fire" destroyed 65 houses and the school building.
- June 25, 1967: A tornado that seriously damaged the nearby village of Tricht and kills five people in Haaften, along with some greenhouses , destroys the Crobhuis , a characteristic building in the Crobschewaard , next to the village's brick factory . In the 19th and 20th centuries, the Crobhuis played an important role in the social life of Haaften as a place for weddings, parties and events.
- January 1, 1978: Haaften merges with neighboring towns to form the municipality of Neerijnen. The former village hall of Haaften on Koningsstraat will then be converted into a residential building.
- February 2, 1995: As a result of the high water level in the Waal, the village was evacuated for three days.
- January 1, 2019: The municipalities of Geldermalsen , Lingewaal and Neerijnen merge to form the municipality of West Betuwe.
