Lucas came from a family from Friesland which provided lawyers, pastors and mayors around 1700. His father was the mayor of Leeuwarden Tjaerd Nicolaus Suringar (born April 13, 1741 in Stiens, † June 18, 1820 in Leiden) and his mother was Baudina Petronella Couperus (born February 16, 1738 in Leeuwarden; † May 15, 1805 in Lingen) . In Leeuwarden he attended the Latin school and left it with the speech De origine et incremenlis graecae et latinae linguae et quantum illae aliis in linguis prosint . In 1785 he moved to Franeker University , where he was supported primarily by Everwinus Wassenbergh (1772–1826) and Johannes van Voorst while studying theology. On June 2, 1790, under Voorst, he defended the treatise Specimen observationum ad loca quaedam Malthaei and on May 2, 1792 the dissertation Philologico-exegetica de diversis vocum… ῾ΑΤΙΟΣ et affinium signif catibus in sacra scriptura . Four years later, in 1796, he was appointed professor of theology and church history at the academic high school in Lingen . He began his office on January 27, 1797 with the speech De vera pietate praecipuo theologi officio and on February 1 of the same year he became the first pastor of the Reformed community there. In Lingen he became rector of the educational institution through the annual change in 1799/1800 and 1813/14. To this end, he gave the speech Oratio de eo quod in praesenti rei literariae et studii speciatim theologici conditione iis praesertim agendum sit et evitandum qui in excolenda religionis disciplina feliciter versari desiderant in 1800 and in 1814 addressed the Tecklenburg-Lingensche Landwehr battalion when it entered Lingen .

On December 10, 1814, he was appointed professor of theology, with the teaching assignment for dogmatics and natural theology, by the curators at the University of Leiden. Therefore, on May 7, 1815, he gave his farewell sermon in Lingen on Paul's first letter to the Thessalonians, chapter 3, verse 9. When he arrived in Leiden, on June 13, 1815, he gave his inaugural address De muneris doctrinae christianae interpretum praestantia a fuiuris religionis doctoribus rite aestimanda . During the restoration phase of the university, he was confirmed in his position as a university professor on October 16, 1815 by royal resolution. He also participated in the organizational tasks of the university. In 1826/27 he was rector of the Alma Mater , which task he gave up with the speech De variis quae rei christianae obortae sunt ealamitatibus in illius commodum atque salutem divina moderante providentia conversis .
