Hermannus van Halen (also: Hermann, Herman ; born August 30, 1633 in Utrecht ; † March 1, 1701 ibid) was a Dutch Reformed theologian.

Life

Hermann was the son of Bartholomeus van Halen and Lucretia Bijlart. In his childhood years his parents moved to Zaltbommel and he grew up with his aunt in Utrecht. In 1650 he moved to the University of Utrecht, where he initially devoted himself to studies at the philosophical faculty and later attended the theological lectures of Gisbert Voetius , Johannes Hoornbeek and Andreas Essenius . In 1658 he became pastor in Klein Ammers (Ammerstol) and in 1664 he went to Utrecht in the same capacity. It was here that he became involved in the theological disputes with Frans Burman that were then ruling in Utrecht .

After his death he brought his only work Judicium de positionibus quibusdam Franequeranis in class Ultrajectina nupera ventilatis. Addita Dissertatione de providentia Divina, Reali et Morali (Utrecht 1680). On March 14, 1681 he was appointed by the curators of the Utrecht University as an associate professor of theology, which office he took up with the speech De fatis populi on April 19 of the same year. Under Petrus van Mastricht he received his doctorate in theology on October 12, 1682. In 1683 he became a full professor of theology and gave lectures on church history.

Halen was a supporter of the closer Reformation , who, however, behaved cautiously towards the supporters of the federal theology of Johannes Coccejus . There is only one known argument with Hermann Alexander Roëll in which he reveals his reference to God. He also took part in the organizational tasks of the Utrecht Academy and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1689/90 and 1699/1700 . Actually he had been more inconspicuous and after his death the other theology professors refused to give him his funeral sermon. This was done by Pieter Burman the Elder , who portrays him as a moderate and peaceful person.

Van Halen was married twice. His first marriage was in 1664 with Petronella († 1692), daughter of Christiaan de Cupere and his wife Maria Magnus. A daughter comes from this marriage. His second marriage was with Catharina Elisabeth, daughter of Petrus de Meyer and his wife Josina van Aerbout. She outlived her husband.
