Friedrich Adolf Lampe

Friedrich Adolph Lampe (* 18 (or 19) April 1683 in Lippe Detmold , † 8. December 1729 in Bremen ) was a Reformed theologian and hymn - writer . He officiated as pastor in Weeze , Duisburg and Bremen.

biography

Lampe's father was Hendrik Lampe, first a preacher in Detmold, later in Frankfurt am Main and finally second court preacher in Königsberg (Prussia) . His mother was Elisabeth Christina, the daughter of Detmold's general superintendent Jakob Zeller. He attended the Academic Gymnasium in Bremen, where Cornelius de Hase also had an influence on him. From 1702 he studied in Franeker with Campegius Vitringa and Hermann Alexander Röell . After completing his studies, he was pastor of the Reformed community of Weeze near Kleve from 1703 to 1706 and in Duisburg from 1706 to 1709 , where he fell out with the followers of Labadies ( Labadists ).

From 1709 to 1720 Lampe was employed at St. Stephani in Bremen . On April 15, 1720 he was appointed professor of theology at the University of Utrecht , received his doctorate in theology on June 22, 1720 and took up the position on June 24, 1720 with the speech de opperste wysheid . After taking over the rectorate of the Alma Mater in 1726/27 , he switched to the professorship of church history on October 21, 1726. After theological disputes, he resigned his offices in 1727 and went to Bremen as a preacher at St. Ansgarii and as a professor and rector at the Academic Gymnasium.

Lampe left behind a large number of academic writings, but also of works written in German with which he wanted to influence the communities. His main work, The Secret of the Gnadenbund, in honor of the great covenant god and opened for edification to all thirsty souls (6 vols .; 1712, 4 1740) continued the reformed federal theology , especially of Johannes Coccejus , independently. His interpretation of the Heidelberg Catechism ( Milk of Truth according to the Heidelberg Catechism, 1720) and other catechetical writings also had a great influence . Above all, they shaped Pietism in the Lower Rhine , but also (through translations) the Reformed churches in the Netherlands and Hungary.
