The INSEP, which is subordinate to the French Ministry of Sport, is classified as é tablissement Public à Caractère Scientifique, Culturel et Professionnel , like universities and other educational and research institutions, among others (German: Establishment of public law scientific, cultural and vocational training). According to its own description, the institution is "an indispensable actor in top sport politics in France and the leading Olympic and Paralympic training center for French sport."

The forerunner is the military gymnastics school École Normale Militaire de Gymnastique , whose history dates back to 1852. After the First World War, athletes and soldiers were trained there, and the school was henceforth called Bataillon de Joinville . In July 1967, the battalion was merged with several military sports facilities and training facilities to form the military sports school École Interarmées des Sports . In 1975 the two chambers of the French parliament decided to create an Institut National du Sport et de l'Éducation Physique (German: National Institute of Sports and Physical Education) as the successor to the Institut National des Sports (German: National Sports Institute) and the École, founded in 1945 Normale Supérieure D'Éducation Physique et Sportive (German: General College for Physical Education and Sports Education ). In November 2009 it was renamed Institut National du Sport, de l'Expertise et de la Performance . In 2017, INSEP was referred to as the “Factory of Masters” in the newspaper Le Parisien . In spring 2017, the former world-class wrestler Ghani Yalouz took over the management of the institute.
