The Place de Breteuil is a square in the 7th and 15th arrondissements of the French capital Paris .

Name origin

The square bears the name of Louis Auguste Le Tonnelier de Breteuil , Baron de Preuilly (1730-1807), like the avenue de Breteuil .

history

The square is located on a roundabout that joins Avenue de Breteuil , Avenue de Saxe , Rue Valentin-Haüy and Rue Duroc . The square was built in 1782 and became the property of the City of Paris on March 19, 1838.

The Grenelle slaughterhouses were built here in 1810 and opened in 1818. With the opening of the Vaugirard slaughterhouses in 1898, the slaughterhouses disappeared. With this demolition, Grenelle's 548 meter fountain could be cleared and a water tower erected.

Pasteur statue

At this point there is now a statue of Louis Pasteur , this statue was built in 1904 by the sculptor Alexandre Falguière .

From May 29 to June 2, 1900, a horse exhibition was held here as part of the World Exhibition in Paris . In addition, the equestrian competitions of the Summer Olympics 1900 were held as part of this .

On July 19, a large military event was held in the square, chaired by the Minister of War, in favor of the Caisse de secours des sociétés amicales des élèves et anciens élèves de l ' École polytechnique et de l' École de Saint-Cyr .
