Hörður Axel Vilhjálmsson (born December 18, 1988 in Reykjavík , Iceland ) is an Icelandic basketball player. He plays in the guard position and can be used as a point guard as well as a shooting guard .

Basketball career

Hörður Axel Vilhjálmsson started his career at the age of 15 in his hometown near Fjölnir Reykjavík . He got into basketball through his brother, who is a basketball coach in Iceland. At the age of 17 he moved to Spain, but returned to Iceland a little later. After he worked again in Spain for a second division team in preparation for the season, he finally played for the Icelandic first division team Keflavík. In the 2010/11 season, Hörður Axel Vilhjálmsson was an average of 33 minutes in 30 games and delivered an average of 16.5 points. With 7.3 assists, he was the third best assists and stole the ball 2.5 times per game, making him the second best player in the league of the season in this category. In 2011, Hörður Axel Vilhjálmsson was finally taken under contract by the Central German BC for the mission "Resurgence" . He received a three-year contract that was valid in both the ProA and the basketball league . In 37 games he stood on the floor for around 23 minutes and delivered 9.6 points and 2.3 assists. In the contract, the MBC reserved the right to terminate the cooperation. However, the ProA climber did not make use of this opportunity in 2011 and so Hörður Axel Vilhjálmsson was also in the MBC squad in the basketball league. Initially as a backup for the position of point guard, Hörður Axel Vilhjálmsson finally worked his way into the club's starting five. After the injuries of team captain Sascha Leutloff and his deputy Chad Timberlake, Hörður Vilhjálmsson took over the role of captain. On June 17, 2013 it was announced that Hörður Axel Vilhjálmsson made use of the option to buy himself out of his existing contract for a four-digit amount. This caused incomprehension and disappointment for the club as well as for fans, because he was firmly expected. Due to the 2013 European basketball championship and the associated absence of some players, the Spanish first division club and vice-cup winner of the ULEB Eurocup 2013 signed CB Bilbao Berri Hörður Axel Vilhjálmsson for the season preparation. After completing the preparation period, he moved within the league to CB Valladolid . Already within the season the desire to switch back to Central German BC arose. On June 3, 2014, the association announced that it would employ Hörður Axel Vilhjálmsson again.

National team

Since the U16, Hörður Axel Vilhjálmsson has always been part of the Icelandic national team, of which he is a member of the senior team. In 2015, the Icelandic national basketball team succeeded for the first time in qualifying for an international competition, the European Championship.
