The pan-Herne Railway and Harbor GmbH (WHE) is a rail and port operators from Herne . The company is owned by the city of Herne.

history

The municipality of Wanne and the district of Gelsenkirchen founded a company in 1905 called "Kanalhafen Wanne-Gelsenkirchen-Land", which was supposed to plan and implement the construction of a coal transshipment port for the surrounding mines in Crange as part of the planning of the Rhine-Herne Canal . From 1913, the then neighboring city of Herne also took part in the project, as a result of which the name of the company was changed to "Hafenbetriebsgesellschaft Herne-Wanne mbH". The port was opened on November 11, 1914 and by 1916 had a handling capacity of over one million tons.

In May 1913, the Arnsberg district government granted permission to build a “small railway similar to that of a branch line ” between the port and the state train station, which also connected the new port to the Shamrock 3/4 mine . On May 16, 1917 Constantin was affiliated. A little later, routes to the Carolinenglück collieries in Bochum and Teutoburgia in Herne were built, and in the 1920s the Krupp collieries and those of Hibernia AG in Bochum were also connected to the rail network. In 1921 the route was 8.72 kilometers long and there were four four-axle Henschel steam locomotives.

With the dissolution of the district of Gelsenkirchen in 1926, its share and the share of the share capital that had previously belonged to the municipality of Wanne was transferred to the newly founded city of Wanne-Eickel. Two years later, another harbor basin was opened as a branch basin from the canal.

In 1928 the pipeline was 2.7 million tons, by 1939 the volume rose to 3.2 million tons. The track length was 13.59 km, the track length 31.52 km.

The company's public railroad was known as the “Wanne-Bochum-Herner Eisenbahn” (WBHE) from 1957, and since 1959 the entire company has been called “Wanne-Herner Eisenbahn und Hafen GmbH” (WHE). After the first diesel locomotives had been in service since 1952 , the last steam locomotives were shut down in 1963 .

WHE has been a service provider for Ruhrkohle AG since 1970 , in addition to the coal mixing plant in the Westhafen and operation of the Steag group power plant in Herne, individual WHE tracks were added in 1972 and finally the main line from the transfer station at Wanne-Eickel Hauptbahnhof to the Westhafen in 1984 RAG trains electrified .

In 1994 the first planning for a freight center (GVZ) in the Westhafen began. In 1996 the first construction work for the container terminal was carried out with the filling of the port basin , which was put into operation in 2002 by the WHE subsidiary “Container Terminal Herne” (CTH).

In 2003, the WHE workshop was certified by the EBA , from 2005 to the construction of a workshop of its own in 2008, Abellio Rail NRW's trains were serviced here.

The WHE has been a member of the “Netzwerk Privatbahnen” branch association since 2010. In 2011 Stadtwerke Herne took over 94.9% of the company shares.

Since it was founded, the company has been operating the Wanne-Ost and Wanne-West ports, which are located on the opposite banks of the Rhine-Herne Canal. A total of 720 m of loading banks are available here, on which around 0.32 million t were handled in 2010. For the handling, the WHE has a crane system with a load capacity of 12 t, a loading and unloading system for dry bulk material, a silo system for filter ash and a deep bunker.

In addition to the bulk cargo handling area, the Emscher GVZ with the CT terminal is also located at the Westhafen .

The WHE operates freight traffic on a total of 34 km of its own track systems as well as on individual routes on the DB network. Eight diesel locomotives were available for this in 2010 (three MaK G 1600 BB , two MaK G 1204 BB , one MaK G 1202 BB and one Deutz KS 55 B each and one Windhoff shunting device), and other machines were occasionally rented. The transport performance in 2010 was around 5 million tons, with the largest part being coal and container transports. Evonik Degussa in Herne and various smaller companies in the port area are also served.

The railway workshop is also located in the Westhafen and has been operating as "ETZ Betriebs GmbH" since January 1, 2010.
