Kayamandi (also Khayamandi ) is a South African township that emerged during apartheid and had a population of 24,645 in 2011. It is located in the Western Cape Province , near the city of Stellenbosch and about 50 kilometers east of Cape Town .
Kayamandi is a poor district mainly inhabited by blacks, which consists of both the "shacks" typical of this type of township and more and more of a number of smaller houses. The most widely spoken language is isiXhosa . The term Kayamandi comes from this language and means "comfortable home" ( ikhaya - "home"; mnandi - "sweet", "pleasant").
Kayamandi is known for the fact that volunteers from all over the world are sent to various projects (kindergarten, elementary school, high school) in the township for a limited period of time with the help of various organizations.
