Stellenbosch is a municipality in the Cape Winelands district , Western Cape Province in South Africa . In 2011 the population was 155,733 on a total area of ​​831 km². The seat of the municipal administration is the city of Stellenbosch .

The municipality got its name from the governor of the Cape Colony , Simon van der Stel , on November 6th, 1679 during an expedition. He named it after himself (derived from "van der Stels bush or forest").
