Stellenbosch is a municipality in the Cape Winelands district , Western Cape Province in South Africa . In 2011 the population was 155,733 on a total area of 831 km². The seat of the municipal administration is the city of Stellenbosch .
The municipality got its name from the governor of the Cape Colony , Simon van der Stel , on November 6th, 1679 during an expedition. He named it after himself (derived from "van der Stels bush or forest").

In 2011 the community had 155,733 inhabitants. Of these, 52.2% were colored , 28.1% black and 18.5% white.
63.8% Afrikaans, 19.6% IsiXhosa and 6.8% English were spoken.
