Witzenberg is a municipality in the Cape Winelands district , Western Cape Province in South Africa . In 2011 the population was 115,946 on a total area of ​​2,851 km². The seat of the municipal administration is Ceres .

The municipality replaced the following municipalities from September 22, 2000: Municipality of Ceres, Matroosberg Transitional Representative Council, Municipality of Prince Alfred's Hamlet, Tulbagh Municipality, Witzenberg Transitional Representative Council and the Municipality of Wolseley.

The municipality is named after the Witzenberg Mountains, which separate the Tulbagh and Ceres valleys. Simon van der Stel , Governor of the Cape Colony , named the mountains after his Dutch friend and Mayor of Amsterdam Nicolaas Witsen .

In 2011 the community had 115,946 inhabitants. Of these, 65.9% were colored , 25.3% black and 7.7% white.

73.8% Afrikaans, 16.2% IsiXhosa , 4.4% Sesotho and 1.9% English were spoken.
