Drakenstein is a municipality in the Cape Winelands district , Western Cape Province in South Africa . In 2011 the population was 251,262 on a total area of ​​1,538 km². The seat of the municipal administration is Paarl .

The community is named after the High Commissioner Hendrik Adriaan van Rheede tot Draakenstein , who visited the Cape in 1685.

The nature reserve Elandsberg Contract Nature Reserve , the largest contiguous section of the Renosterveld, lies on the territory of the municipality .
